Dorchester's Country Churches: White Haven UMC

The current White Haven United Methodist Church has stood on the main road of Church Creek since 1908.

CHURCH CREEK — The White Haven United Methodist congregation can trace its history in Church Creek back to the late eighteenth century when a village chapel was one of seven Methodist meetings registered in a Dorchester County land record in November 1794.

The following June a deed was executed for the church lot between Thomas Kallander and the church trustees. The one-half acre parcel, part of a tract known as “White Haven,” was conveyed to John Dorsey, William Geoghegan, Capewell Keene, John Fooks, Ezekial Vickars, Henry Ennalls, Levin Keene, Ezekial Johnson and Thomas Breerwood.

The property description located the lot at the head of Church Creek along the main county road adjacent to a property owned by Captain Edward Wright. The Methodist Episcopal congregation of Church Creek has financed the construction of several buildings on this site, which is also distinguished by a centuries old tree known as the “Treaty Oak.”

The current church, dating to 1908 by the inscription in the marble cornerstone, was erected during the pastorship of Reverend Horace E. Truitt.
