Dorchester YMCA’s 8th annual Crab Run held Saturday

CAMBRIDGE — The Dorchester Family YMCA held its 8th Annual Crab run on Saturday, attracting serious and casual athletes to the springtime fund-raising tradition. The day featured a 5K and a half-marathon course, as well as the King Crab, which comprised both for the especially fit.

Walkers and strollers were welcome on the 5K, which wound its way along the river in Cambridge, for a pleasant and not too taxing excursion.

“A special shout out to those who dedicated many hours to make the day happen,” a statement from the YMCA said on social media.

“Staff Liz Powers and Barbara Wheatley, Event Chairs Steve Culver and Mary Ann Moore, Board Members, as well as Gerry Boyle, John Burtman and Angie Hengst with Ironman Maryland, Cambridge Multi-Sport Club and everyone else who provided tons of volunteer support, we couldn’t do it without you.”

Organizers had special praise for members of Athletes Serving Athletes (ASA), who participated in the group’s WingMan program.

“The WingMan program empowers individuals with disabilities the opportunity to train and race in mainstream running and multi-sport events,” a statement on ASA’s website said. “ASA provides the athlete and his or her WingMan team with all of the equipment and resources necessary to cross the finish line including picking a race, hosting regularly scheduled group run opportunities and managing all race day logistics.”

It’s “an organization and volunteers who work tirelessly to make the dreams and aspirations of all athletes come true,” the YMCA statement said. “And of course, thanks to all those who participated. We appreciate your support of our Y and our community. You are what makes Cambridge the best place to work, live and play.”
