CAMBRIDGE — The 20th Dorchester County Relay for Life held on May 20 was a major success, having reached over $20,000 more than its original goal, according to Gail Skinner, event chair. As of this year’s “20 Years ... #Purple Strong” event, the local cancer organization has raised approximately $2 million since its inception in 1996. The annual cancer fundraiser held at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, hit a total of $113,482 in funds raised, surpassing the $90,000 goal set last fall. There were 24 teams with 277 participants in the event, plus 124 cancer survivors signed up for the walk. Mrs. Skinner announced the following five top teams, with Team Lifesavers listed as number one, having raised $17,554. Others were: Team Sandy Hill; Team BEST; The Weber Grillers; and Doyle’s Dynasty. The top individual fundraiser was Christine Foxwell, with $8,295, followed by Dawn Cook, Nancy Phillips, Richard Warfield and Karol Redline. The top youth fundraiser was Ben Doyle with $5,591. “The funds raised truly make a difference — just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year,” said Mrs. Skinner. Funds raised are used for such programs as the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery program, which matches cancer patients with specially trained volunteer drivers. Mrs. Skinner thanked the teams for their fundraising efforts, as well as individuals and businesses for their donations and in-kind services. “The Relay For Life Committee is in awe of the generosity of this county and we continue to be amazed at those who work so hard for this important cause.”
