CAMBRIDGE — Participants in the 22nd Dorchester Relay For Life celebrated “May the Cure Be With You” at their annual cancer awareness and fundraising event. As Jedi Master Yoda advises: “Try not. Do. . .or do not” and the 20 Relay teams and cancer survivors did just that. They weren’t just trying, they were doing — and raised over $72,500 in the process. The 2018 theme — “May the Cure Be With You” — was chosen to highlight the progress modern medicine has made in helping to find cures for many types of cancers as well as to draw attention to the many programs of the American Cancer Society. Despite a rainy day that moved Relay inside to Governor’s Hall at Sailwinds Park, participants celebrated in high style with music by the Maple Elementary School Marching Lions Band under the direction of Ray Washington, DJ Whisper, and Matt King and the Unacceptables. The event was kicked off with a rendition of the National Anthem by North Dorchester Middle School student Airrianna Lednum. The luminaria walk was led by bagpiper Randy Welch, playing “Amazing Grace.” Relay teams have been working throughout the year raising funds and awareness at various events in the area. The May 18 event was the culmination of those efforts as cancer survivors and their families, teams and corporate sponsors gathered at Sailwinds. Guest speaker at the event was Cambridge resident Cecil Johnson, a cancer survivor and owner of the Cambridge Spice Company. He noted his commitment to the cause came not only from his own battle with cancer, but because of the members of his family who have fought the disease. Following a cancer survivors’ reception, survivors and their supporters took the first lap around the luminaria circle, with the Cambridge Police Department Color Guard leading the way. The top three fundraising teams were Team B.E.S.T., Team Lifesavers and Sandy Hill Elementary School. “The Dorchester Relay For Life Committee is proud of the success of this year’s Relay, which was held for the first time at Sailwinds Park,” said chair Dawn Cook. “We are grateful to Dorchester Post 91, American Legion for their willingness to host the 2018 Relay and for all of their help. Our county’s Relay For Life has raised over $2 million during our 22 years of fighting cancer, which is truly amazing, and certainly honors survivors and the memory of those who have lost the fight.”
