The Eastern Shore Hospital Center’s English Hall welcomed the Dorchester Garden Club members for their Sept. 11 meeting. Hostesses Kathy Miller and Dee Terry greeted members as they arrived with their horticulture and design entries for the mini flower show.

Dorchester Garden Club President, Julia Berman, called the meeting to order and members recited the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a period of silence in solemn memory of Sept. 11, 2001. Guest attendees Sandy Lucas, Bev Waggoner, Sue Jones and Terry Neuwer were introduced and Cookie Brohawn welcomed recently installed Evelyn Renkwitz to her first meeting as an official member of the club.

Ms. Berman delivered the President’s report and also announced that club member Linda Rossi had accepted the position of 1st Vice President for the remainder of the club’s 2015-2016 term. Club Chairmen were then invited to share their reports followed by other announcements of interest to the club. Members were treated to a gourmet luncheon buffet prepared and served by the Eastern Shore Hospital Center’s talented catering staff.

The September program “A Bird Friendly Garden” featured Dr. Jennie Carr, assistant professor of biology at Washingon College in Chestertown. Dr. Carr is a researcher in avian behavior. Her presentation discussed ways that gardeners are able to meet the needs of birds and the three critical components of Food, Water and Shelter. Dr. Carr stressed the importance of feeding birds during the upcoming winter months which can mean the difference between life and death for our feathered visitors – and shared tips on having a wide variety of food, feeders, water and shelter sources to support the diverse needs of both year-round and migrating bird populations.
