Dorchester Center for the Arts Showcase this Sunday

Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) will present the 38th annual Dorchester Center for the Arts Showcase, this Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Nathan Foundation, the Maryland State Arts Council, The Copy Shop; State Farm Insurance-Kurt Riehl; the National Bank of Cambridge, Midshore Cremation and Dr. C. Edmund Connelly. There will be artisans, food vendors, area nonprofit organizations and live entertainment. Showcase takes place along historic High Street in Cambridge and admission is free.

Decoy Carving Classes Expands

Md-spectrum warren 2x-092414 Special to Dorchester Banner/DCA Master Carver Warren Saunders will be instructing two carving classes at DCA this fall.

Dorchester Center of the Arts announces that Master Carver Warren Saunders will be offering two carving classes at DCA for the fall session. Beginner level carvers and those who favor hand tools will meet Monday evenings starting Oct. 6 and running for 10 weeks. Power tool users and those at more advanced levels will meet on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks, starting Oct. 2.

Both classes will run from 6-9 pm. Session fees are $125 for members, $165 non-members. A $50 supply fee is payable to instructor on first class date.

Mr. Saunders is a master decoy carver who was born and raised on a farm in Dorchester. He is one of only three artists contracted by MD to craft art from the famous “Wye Oak.” In 2012, Mr. Saunders was honored by Maryland Traditions, the folklife program of the Maryland State Arts Council, with its annual Master-Apprenticeship award. This award showcases living traditions and rewards master artists in the performing, material and building arts.

DCA October Gallery Show

DCA will present a special exhibit “Art in Architecture” in the main galleries from Oct. 2 through Oct. 25. The Center is located at 321 High St. in Cambridge, and the show will feature a collection of photographs and drawings of buildings, bridges, and other physical structures.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Oct. 11 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will include live music and light refreshments. For more information call 410-228-7782.
