Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) is offering unique art experiences during the month of August. Information about these activities can also be found on the website at dorchesterarts.org CERAMICS WORKSHOP: “Building Beginnings” Instructed by Patrick Jurena In this beginner-level workshop, students will learn the timeless, hand-building techniques of creating pinch pots, coils, and slabs to make decorative pottery, functional art, or sculptures. Use of tools such as molds and slab roller will be demonstrated. The workshop fee includes use of pottery tools, clay, glazes, and firings. The sessions are planned to allow for project drying and firing prior to glazing on the final day. The class is open to ages 16 – adult. The three part session begins Aug. 5 from 6-8 p.m.; continues Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Bring a lunch and drink.) and finishes on Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fees are: $120 for DCA members; $155 for non-members. IN THE GALLARIES: DCA will present “Lighthouse Views,” a series of photographs of the Choptank River Lighthouse taken by Jill Jasuta. Also included will be selected paintings and renderings by other accomplished artists. The exhibit will run Aug. 4 through Aug. 28, and an Artists’ Reception will be held on Second Saturday, Aug. 13, from 5-7:30 p.m. The evening will include live music by Cynthia G. Miles and light refreshments. Seeking artist vendors for 40th Annual DCA Showcase The Dorchester Center for the Arts is accepting applications from artists for vendor space at the 40th Annual Dorchester Center for the Arts Showcase. This street arts festival will be held on Sept. 25 in downtown Cambridge, and draws thousands of visitors to the area each year. Booth spaces will be awarded to only those vendors offering 100 percent artisan crafted domestic made goods. New vendors are required to submit three (3) photographs of their work with the application. Booth spaces are 10’ x 10’ and the cost is $75. Each vendor will be asked to donate one item for a raffle to benefit DCA. For more information, call 410-228-7782. Editor’s note: Spectrum is the weekly column of the Dorchester Arts Center. It is written by Mickey Love, executive director.
