Growers’ workshop at UMES

Herb growers can get ready for fall by attending a free hands-on class to learn seed saving techniques and what to plant before winter on Oct. 7, at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore’s Research, Extension and Teaching Farm.

The half-day workshop (9:30 a.m.-noon) focuses on the use of seed saving screens, how to remove seeds from plants and cleaning methods for seed storage. Led by Henriette den Ouden, a specialty herbs consultant with UMES Extension’s Small Farm Program, the class will also cover why growers should save seeds from herbs and the differences between them and vegetable seeds.

Register for this and other UMES Extension events at umes.edu/extension/events. For more information, contact the UMES Small Farm Program at smallfarms@umes.edu or 410-621-5450 ext. 101.

Rubber Chicken Drop at Easton Airport

Easton Airport Day will feature the Rubber Chicken Drop Contest during the 14th annual event Oct. 14.

There will be a display of rare and unique aircraft, military jets, planes, pilots and airport equipment. Gates will open at 9:15 a.m. Opening ceremonies will commence at 10 a.m. on the terminal ramp. At noon, the Warbirds of Easton Airport Day will take to the skies, performing mass formation flying above the airport and Talbot County.

As the aircraft make their return to the airfield, they will transition to the entertaining Rubber Chicken Drop Contest. This challenge allows the pilots to show their skills to the audience one last time, as they roar down the runway and toss rubber chickens toward their target – the bed of an Easton Airport pickup truck.

Throughout the year, pilots eagerly anticipate this fun-filled challenge. The objective is simple: The pilot who gets their rubber chicken closest to the target truck wins.

Easton Airport Day is free to attend. Various food vendors will be on-site. A full schedule of activities for Easton Airport Day 2023 will be available online at eastonairportday.com.
