CAMBRIDGE — Nearly 200 of Dorchester’s senior citizens gathered at Delmarva Community Services on Nov. 21 for a holiday celebration. The Annual MAC Senior Program Thanksgiving Luncheon featured greetings from DCS President/CEO Santo Grande and Mistress of Ceremonies Mary Handley, a poetry reading by Joanna Fuchs, a song by Luther Cornish, music with DJ Randy Potter and a blessing by Mary Mouring. Special music was played by Frances Cresswell and Cynthia Bech on DCS’s baby grand piano, donated by an Ocean City hotel.

But of course, the special feature of the day of was the food prepared by Chef Larry Roberts and his staff: Roasted turkey and gravy, sage dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, sweet potato pie and iced tea.

The diners were warmly welcomed to the celebration. “On behalf of DCS, we’re here because we’re thankful for you,” Ms. Handley told the seniors, citing their contributions of careers and raising families. “A lot of people think you are pretty important.”

As in years past, members of the Cambridge Rotary Club donated their time to plate and serve the meals, a crucial element in making the day a success. “I want to thank the Rotarians for every they’ve done,” Mr. Grande said.

All Dorchester senior citizens were invited to return to the MAC Center more often. “We’re thinking of you every day,” Mr. Grande said.

DCS operates the local MAC Center, which serves senior citizens with meals and activities. “Our mission is to provide programs and services that preserve dignity, health and independence for an aging population,” a statement on the group’s website says.
