CAMBRIDGE — An employee at one of Dorchester County Public Schools has tested positive for COVID-19.

“I can confirm a member of the DCPS staff has tested positive, but due to privacy concerns we will not share their work location or further information,” Communications and Community Outreach Specialist Valerie Goff emailed in reply to a request for information Thursday from the Dorchester Banner. “ Mr. Bromwell will not be making a statement.”

The first day of in-person instruction for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades was on Tuesday, after the previous school year ended and the current one began with only online classes. In the coming weeks, additional students and grades are scheduled to join classes for in-person instruction as the public schools’ Phase 2 is implemented.

While in the buildings, students and teachers wear masks and follow distancing rules. Parents are asked to check their children for symptoms before allowing them to attend every day. Teachers must answer a series of questions online before they are allowed into their buildings.

Parents’ views on reopening schools have ranged from hoping classes remain online only, to demanding that in-person education resume immediately. Those who have called for schools to open have often cited the difficulties associated with child care and missing work when students are at home.
