CAMBRIDGE - Dorchester Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Harriet Tubman Museum, is pleased to host the National African American Quilt Guild for their inaugural national meeting from Nov. 12-13. Activities will be held at the Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High St., as well as the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center, 424 Race St., Cambridge.
The NAAQG is a nonprofit organization created to preserve and promote the history and legacy of African American quilting and quilters. Its co-founders, Rhonda Masters, Sharon Mooney and Laura Casmore of Texas, have embraced a mission of celebration, education and service to honor and elevate the African American quilting legacy.
The weekend’s events will be held in person and virtually and will include speakers, quilting seminars, displays, workshops and musical performances.
Several guild members have submitted quilts that appear in the exhibition at DCA. The exhibit, titled "A Celebration of African American Quilts and Fiber Arts," features a display of African American Sampler Quilts from across the country and other African influenced quilts of unique designs. States represented include Maryland, Rhode Island, Indiana, South Carolina, Tennessee, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, California, New Jersey, and Texas as well as Washington, D.C. Many of these hand-crafted quilts are for sale.
While the convention will end on Nov. 13, the quilt exhibition will be up through Dec. 11. Second Saturday Artists’ Receptions will be held on Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, starting at 5 p.m. NAAQG founders will be attending the November reception to share the story of the organization.
Additionally, “Jazz at the Mural” will be held at DCA on Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall with the Terry Koger Quintet. For the complete schedule and additional information, including event tickets, please visit www.naaqg.org or harrietinyou.simpletix.com.
