The Dorchester Center for the Arts will present its Annual Dorchester County Community Photography and Digital Arts Exhibit and Competition beginning Oct. 30 and running through Nov. 29. This notice is a call for entries.

The Photography Show is open to the public. The show is judged and each photographer may enter up to three works. Photos must be original, completed within the last two years, and not previously exhibited in a public show. Judging is based on the quality of the photograph, originality, composition and overall presentation. Cash awards will be given in each of the three divisions: Youth, Amateur Adult and Professional Adult, for Best Close-up Photo, as well as a DCA gift certificate for Best in Show. Ribbons will be awarded for the People’s Choice and honorable mentions.

All photographs must be either gallery wrapped or mounted/matted, framed, under glass or plexiglass, and properly wired, ready to hang. Digitally enhanced or altered photos or photo collages are acceptable, however, if extensive computer manipulation has been done, please note it on the Registration and Entry Forms.

Registration forms are available at the Center, or can be downloaded from the website at dorchesterarts.org. Registration forms are due by Oct. 25, and all entries must be delivered on Oct. 25 or 27 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Center, located at 321 High St. in Cambridge, will host an Artists’ Reception on Nov. 8 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. and awards will be presented. Refreshments will be served and music will be provided. Photographs are available for view and some are for purchase during the Center’s regular business hours which are Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 410-228-7782.

Ashley Watkins, Flutist

Encore Performance at DCA

The community is invited to attend the encore concert of Cambridge’s own Ashley Watkins on flute on Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. Recipient of two standing ovations for her August performance at DCA, Ashley will be bringing new selections from her repertoire.

Ashley earned her Bachelor of Music in 2008 from James Madison University, studying

under Dr. Beth Chandler. In 2010 she received a Master of Music from the University of Akron in Ohio, under George Pope. She continues to perform as a soloist throughout the community and beyond, spreading and sharing her love and passion for music.

Unique Art Opportunities

• Ceramic Flowers for the Fall Garden- Instructor Ann Geiger.

Participants will enjoy two sessions in the clay studio making garden art. Using handbuilding techniques, students will create decorative pieces to add colors to the fall garden or home. No experience is necessary.

The two-part workshop with take place Nov. 4 and Nov, 6 from 5 – 8 p.m. Fees are $55 for DCA members; $85 for nonmembers.

• Festive Fall Apple Bags – Instructor Windy Karpavage

Students will work with a pattern kit that includes all materials, and yields a charming, felted-wool apple bag in a variety of colors, decorated with beading. This class is for the intermediate student.

The two-day workshop will take place on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students should bring a lunch. The fees are $40 for DCA members and $70 for nonmembers, plus a $50 supply fee payable to the instructor.
