July 8 is the official kick off for the Summer Arts Camp program at DCA. Classes are scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions. Children registered for both should bring a lunch and drink.
Sign-ups are underway for classes continuing through August. For the first week, ages 5-9 can do “Crafty Arts” from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and then explore Medieval Times from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Ages 10 and up can get moving with hip hop dance from 9 a.m. to noon, then try their hand at ceramics wheel throwing from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Additional weeks include Hip Hop Choreography, Ceramics Hand Building, Drawing, Sewing, Recycled Arts, Origami, Animals, Landscapes, and so much more. A special Mini Mozart Music Camp for ages 3-6 will be held July 22-26, 10 a.m. to noon.
In August, Maris Wicker returns to camp with her Musical Theatre Program for ages 10 and up, to be held Aug. 5-9 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Visit DCA online at www.dorchesterarts.org for complete camp brochure. Scholarships available for all ages.
Summer Arts for Adults
Two-day Plein Air Workshop with award-winning local Plein Air painter Maggii Sarfaty. This informal introduction will be held on July 13-14, from 10 a.m. - noon daily.
Each day will start with an instructional demo followed by lots of one-on-one attention. Students will be painting along the water at Long Wharf Park. Tuition is $60 for DCA members, $75 future-members. $12 materials fee payable to instructor.
Two-day furniture restoration workshop: Fun and Funky Furniture Upcycle with Terri Griffin, will be held July 19, 5 to 8 p.m. and July 20, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants are asked to bring in their own small piece of furniture to work on, such as an end table or small cabinet.
All supplies will be provided. Participants will take home their completed piece as well as an instructional printout of the process for future reference.
Paint Pour Workshops with Pattie Logan will be held on Aug. 21 and 28, 6-8 p.m. Sign up for one, or both, and learn the techniques for yielding unique results with this fun paint form. Call DCA for details: 410-228-7782.
Artful News and Notes of Interest
Heartfelt thanks to the Guest Artist Teams for their substantial donations of time and talent, to the businesses that supported the event with donations and items for the auction, and to all who attended the event on June 15. In addition to proceeds that will benefit arts enrichment programs for all ages, 21 summer camp scholarships were funded through the live auction!
At the Annual DCA Membership Meeting on June 17, the following slate of officers was elected: President: Matthew Smyth, Vice President: Will Dennehy, Treasurer: Betsey Harrington, Secretary: Stephyn Butcher. Caroline Cline will continue her term as executive committee liaison, a position appointed by the full DCA Board.
