DCA kicks off a creative new year

CAMBRIDGE – Dorchester Center for the Arts extends its deep appreciation to all for being a part of the arts over the past year. A new lineup of activities will kick off the new year - new classes and workshops, new opportunities for musical enjoyment, dance, and exhibit participation. January 2024 highlights include:

  • “Youthful Minds, Big Ideas” opens in the galleries Jan. 5, featuring work by students of the E.L. Haynes Public Charter School in Washington, D.C.
  • Open Mic series opens Jan. 9, 6-9 p.m., repeating every Tuesday night. Guest host every week. Bring your instrument and join the lineup, or just come to enjoy.
  • Open Dance series opens Jan. 11, 6-9 p.m., repeating every Thursday night. The series kicks off with guest instructor Morgan Hunsicker.
  • Second Saturday reception Jan. 13, featuring Makayla Lizzy Music Live from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
  • “Sol Roots” Concert Jan. 27, 7 p.m. in the George B. Todd Performance Hall. In partnership with the Harriet Tubman Museum, DCA welcomes Sol Roots to kick off the museum’s 2024 Jazz at the Mural series. The Sol Roots Band performs a mix of raw funk, deep blues, energetic rock, greasy soul and hypnotic grooves. Sol is a guitarist and vocalist who has toured with many roots, funk, blue and soul legends around the world as a part of Music Maker Revue. Tickets are available on the museum website, org.
  • Learn something new in the new year! Class sampling: Stained Glass for Beginners and Intermediates with Jan Boettger starts Jan. 9; Beginning Watercolors with Diana Evans starts Jan. 11; Abstracted Landscapes in Acrylic or Oil, one-day workshop with Abby Ober on Jan. 13; Ceramics: Next Step Wheel with Robert Gladney - six-week class starts Jan. 18; Drawing for Beginners with Naomi Clark-Turner – six-week class starts Jan. 24.
