County sets Halloween hours

CAMBRIDGE — Members of the Dorchester County Council decided unanimously that Halloween will be observed by county residents on Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m. for children ages 12 and younger.

“This policy will not supersede prescheduled times and dates set by municipalities,” a statement from the council said. “Residents living outside town limits should follow the county policy set forth by the County Council, unless they intend on carrying their child(ren) into a town.”

In other county news:

• The council is seeking state authorization to allow the use of golf carts on the roads of Upper and Middle Hoopers Island. The vehicles are currently legal in Vienna.

A letter to the area’s delegation in Annapolis — Senator Addie Eckardt (R-37), and Delegates Christopher Adams (R-37B), Johnny Mautz (R-37B) and Sheree Sample-Hughes (D-37A), was distributed at Tuesday’s meeting with legislators. Dated Jan. 24, 2019, the letter indicates the council’s continuing effort to have legislation passed in the upcoming session.

The letter reads, “On behalf of the Dorchester County Council, I am forwarding the proposed legislation to authorize the operation of golf carts by an individual who possesses a valid driver’s license on a highway on Upper or Middle Hoopers Island for introduction during the 2019 Maryland General Assembly Session.

“The golf cart must be operated on a highway on which the maximum speed limit does not exceed 30 miles per hour and he equipped with lighting devices for visibility purposes. The proposed legislation also states that the County Council of Dorchester County, Maryland may designate, by resolution, the County highways on Upper or Middle Hoopers Island on which a person may operate a golf cart.

“Thank you for your consideration of this legislative initiative.” The letter was signed by President William V. Nichols.

• The legislators were also asked to seek amendments to the Alcoholic Beverages Section of the Annotated Code of Maryland, which would allow non-profit organizations which lease Governor’s Hall at Sailwinds Park to obtain a Class C beer, wine and liquor license, since Sailwinds of Cambridge, Inc. has been forfeited.

  • On Oct. 22 shortly before 7 p.m., the county's burn ban was lifted.
