Jake Coleman, third from the left, has announced his retirement as head coach of Cambridge-South Dorchester’s varsity football team.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE – Jake Coleman has resigned as head coach of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s varsity football team. He announced the move April 17 in a post on social media. He leaves the program after compiling a record of 92-51, with 10 consecutive 1A Bayside Titles and two region titles. Under Coach Coleman, the Vikings made the playoffs for 10 consecutive years, while carrying a grade-point average of 3.14 or higher. “It’s been no secret around the C-SD football family that I have no desire to be the head coach when my kids come through the football program. I just want to be in a support role like my father Willis Coleman and his father Leonard Coleman was before him,” Mr. Coleman wrote. “I actually made my principal and former C-SD head football coach Dave Bromwell aware in the fall, but wanted to complete my fundraising obligation and give the next head coach a great situation to start the next chapter of C-SD football. The 2018 team is loaded with returning starters and playmakers and I’m positive I’ve left the program in a great condition for the next head coach.” Mr. Coleman, who is a physical education teacher at C-SD, thanked his family for their support, Mr. Bromwell and Athletic Director Dan Dobronz for their guidance and patience. He also expressed his gratitude to his junior varsity and varsity coaches over the years, naming Eric Otey, Derek Coleman, Dan Dobronz, Brian Harris, Gaven Parker, Frankie Whirley and David Dodson for special mention. “The number one person I want to thank is my beautiful wife Melanie, who gave me endless support and basically raised our boys on her own for half the year every year after becoming a head football coach’s wife at 23 years old,” he wrote. “You are amazing and I’ll never be able to thank you enough. I love you.” Many friends and fans of the program thanked Mr. Coleman for his service to the local community. “Tradition does not graduate. I commend you on your decision, although I know it is probably the hardest thing you’ve ever done,” Mike Parks wrote. “Thank you for keeping Vegas Gold and Blue true to its core.” Charles Bilconish wrote, “Thank you for keeping the C-SD winning tradition going. You are a great example of a caring person and a great example for all.” “I’ve had so many great student-athletes that I’m so proud to have coached,” Mr. Coleman wrote. “The memories are truly a blessing.”
