Christine Wadsworth Burkett

CAMBRIDGE - Mrs. Christine Wadsworth Burkett was born on Jan. 24, 1921 to John Wesley and Ada Agnes Pinkett. She passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at the Mallard Bay Center. Christine received her early education in the public schools of Dorchester County, Md. She left school and at an early age and worked earnestly to receive her General Education Certificate. Christine married Charles Arthur Burkett on March 11, 1943. Christine worked for Phillips Packing Company, Gabrial's Restaurant and Dorchester County Public Schools. Her entrepreneurial spirit afforded her and husband Charles to open the well-known C&C Cafe on the popular Pine Street in Cambridge, MD. She accepted The Lord at an early age starting at Zoar Methodist Church in Reids Grove and then transferred her membership to Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church in Cambridge, MD. Christine was very active in the church and community where she belonged to the United Methodist Women's hot meals program, the Flying Needles and the Carnation Club. She also belonged to the Dorchester Community Organization and the Dorchester Community General Hospital Auxiliary. Christine was known for her cooking and you could always find her serving delicious dinners at the church. She also delivered candy and cookies during the Christmas holiday. Preceding Christine in death are her husband, Charles Burkett; and her parents, John Wesley and Ada Agnes Pinkett. Christine was also preceded in death by her sisters, Marjorie Thomas(Luther), Winifred Pinkett, Mary Jane Cephas (Leon), Irene Ward(Charles); brothers, Earl Pinkett, John Wesley Pinkett Jr., Quitman Pinkett; and brother- in-law, Linwood Major. Christine leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter, Elvir Stanley of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Gary Burkett (Kelli) of Bowie, Md., Gale Burkett (Jean) of Houston, TX. She also leaves to mourn four grandchildren; Dionne Lewis (Tyrone) of Silver Spring, Md., Sean Burkett (Keisha) of Upper Marlboro, Md., Ivan Burkett (Breanne) of Pearland Texas, Byron Burkett of San Antonio, Texas; two grea-grandchildren, Zoe Burkett of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Dylan Burkett of Pearland, Texas; two sisters, Glendora Major of Cambridge, Md., and Sylvia Tilghman (Alvin) of Severn, Md.; three sister-in-laws, Ruby Pinkett of Philadelphia, Pa. and Johnny Faye Pinkett of Los Angeles, Calif. and Hazel Pinkett of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of nephews, cousins and friends. Services will be held on Sat., Nov. 16th 1:00 p.m. at Waugh Chapel UM Church 425 High St, Cambridge, MD., with a viewing two hours prior. Interment Monday, Nov. 17th, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., Veterans Cemetery. Condolences sent to www.henryfuneralhomepa.com.
