CAMBRIDGE – In early September, people started arriving at the Dorchester Center for the Arts, looking for the Chorus of Dorchester rehearsal. Several have been a part of this group for many years; for others it is their very first rehearsal with the Chorus of Dorchester. By the time the singing got started, there were close to 50 volunteers warming up and getting excited for another Christmas concert season.
The all-volunteer, 60-voice Chorus of Dorchester has begun rehearsing the seasonal music of Bach, Handel, Dvorak, Mozart and more in preparation for three concerts. This will be the group’s 48th Christmas concert season and, as always, the shows are open and free to the public. Dates and times of the concerts are: Christ Episcopal Church, 601 Church St., Cambridge, Dec. 9 at 4 p.m.; The Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High St., Cambridge, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.; and The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay, 100 Heron Blvd., Cambridge, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m.
Rehearsals are being held on the second floor in the Dorchester Center for the Arts at 321 High St. in Cambridge from 7-8:30 each Tuesday evening. The chorus is under the direction of its founder, Cookie Brohawn, accompanied by longtime piano accompanist Laura Todd, and is funded by The Nathan Foundation. Pianists Barbara Hubbard and Maris Wicker often accompany when needed.
The members of the Chorus of Dorchester hail from Dorchester, Talbot and Caroline counties. Having been organized in 1975 for the purpose of celebrating the nation’s 200th birthday in 1976, a few members now sing with family members, spouses, children and even grandchildren.
No auditions and no membership fees are required for anyone. The ability to read music is highly advised for ease of rehearsals for all members.
The Chorus of Dorchester is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, whose members sing purely for the love of it. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the chorus may email Ms. Brohawn at cookiebrohawn@comcast.net. She also can be reached at 410-463-1778.
Membership chair Dr. Betty Malkus may be contacted at bettymalkus@gmail.com, or by calling 410-463-3306. The Dorchester Center for the Arts can be reached at 410-228-7782.
