CAMBRIDGE — “Non-Violence is the Most Potent Weapon” was the theme of Choptank Elementary School’s 3rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther Kin, Jr. essay contest. The contest was open to all students and organized by Kawana Webb, CES School social worker.

The students had to explain how approaching a situation in a non-violent manner is a powerful tool to reaching a peaceful solution. They were able to relate this theme to themselves or others in their family, school, neighborhood, or the world. Upon completion, all essays were judged by a group of local educators and administrators. The winners of this year’s contest were:

• 3rd grade – KeMara Pinkett

• 4th grade – JahMir Jenkins

• 5th grade – Zamiera Page

Each winner read his/her essay at the Dorchester County NAACP Annual Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast on Jan. 19, at the Dorchester Elks #223. The theme for the breakfast was “What are you doing for others?” The speaker was the Dorchester County Department of Social Services Director, Nicholette Smith-Bligen.

Students, along with their parents, enjoyed a wonderful breakfast and an opportunity to share essays with all who were in attendance. There were several community leaders in attendance, including Superintendent Dr. Henry Wagner and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Lorenzo Hughes. Board of Education Board Members, President Phil Bramble, Vice President Glenn Bramble, and member LeOtha Hull also represented our district.

The winners received a Certificate of Participation and $25 Walmart gift certificate. The Walmart gift certificate was donated by The Law Offices of Jodi Cavanaugh Jews. Every student who submitted an essay will enjoy a pizza party hosted by Papa John’s Pizza on Jan. 29. Thanks to all of the students who participated and to the educators and administrators who volunteered their time to judge the essays.
