CAMBRIDGE — Chesapeake College, Maryland’s first regional college serving five Eastern Shore counties, awarded the 2015 1880 Bank Scholarship to Cambridge resident Shelby Louise Glessner. This year’s scholarship recipients and their sponsors were officially recognized at a luncheon on Nov. 18 on campus. A 2015 graduate of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, Shelby is a freshman in the Liberal Arts and Sciences program and plans to continue her education at a four-year college in order to earn a B.S. in Environmental Science. She learned about the bank’s scholarship for Chesapeake students from her grandmother, Susan Blake, co-owner of Bay Country Security. The $1,000 scholarship is available annually to a full-time student residing in Dorchester County. Shelby visited 1880’s High Street branch on Nov. 20 to personally thank the bank’s team for supporting the scholarship program. In a meeting with Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer Greg Olinde, she explained how her experience working at the Horn Point Oyster Hatchery at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences inspired her education and career choice. An 1880 Bank customer herself, Shelby told Mr. Olinde she planned to download the mobile banking app in order to access her accounts remotely while in college. 1880 Bank is a strong champion of educational programs benefitting Eastern Shore residents. In addition to the Chesapeake College scholarship, the bank sponsors the Dorchester County Public Schools Math 24 Tournament Challenge and the Wye River Upper School. According to Mindy Schaefer, Chesapeake College’s financial aid director, the school awards over $365,000 in scholarship aid annually because of support from business leaders and the community’s commitment to higher education.
