CAMBRIDGE - Chaney Tonker Christopher, 88, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2007 at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born on May 13, 1918, in Lee County, Va., the daughter of the late Zack Tonker and Mary Jane Sybert Tonker.

She was married on Nov. 20, 1945, to John Corbin Christopher who died on July 5, 1970.

Mrs. Christopher owned and operated Christopher's Grocery Store in East Cambridge for many years. Later she assisted at Wanda's Day Care, where she was fondly known as "Granny."

She enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, crafts, flowers and making quilts. She had a love for St. Paul's United Methodist Church where she was a member for many years.

She is survived by two children, Howard Christopher and his wife, Wanda, and Dawn Slacum-Eaton and her husband, Gary all of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Buddy and his wife, Sharon of Trappe, Wendy and her husband, Billy Shertenlieb, Eddie Slacum and Becky Slacum, all of Cambridge, and seven great-grandchildren, Buddy, Corbin and Destiny Christopher, Marijane Brohawn and Chaney Shertenlieb, Sierra and Christopher Slacum, and one brother, Zackie Tonker of Warner Robbins, Ga.

She was preceded in death by 10 siblings, Martin Tonker, Ethel Tonker, Virgil Tonker, Annabelle Lambert, Cora Warner, Howard Tonker, Robert Tonker, Eula Mae Shelton, Pauline Tonker and Cleo Morris, all of Virginia.

A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday, at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Friends may call on the funeral home today from 6-8 p.m.
