WYE MILLS — The Cancer Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health recently celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day® with an event held at Chesapeake College, honoring cancer survivors throughout the region. National Cancer Survivors Day® is observed annually, the first Sunday in June, to celebrate those who have recovered from and survived a cancer diagnosis. Sixty cancer survivors and their guests – a total of 120 people – attended the annual event.

Participants in the festivities – which were themed “Survivorship is a BIG Deal” – enjoyed food and entertainment, including a game of “Let’s Make a Deal,” where cancer survivors had the opportunity to win a variety of prizes donated by local merchants.

“This annual event gives us an opportunity to celebrate the members of our local communities who have survived and thrived after a cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery,” comments Brian Leutner, director of Oncology Services at UM Shore Regional Health. “National Cancer Survivors Day® also gives us an opportunity to educate people about the various components of the survivorship process, including caregiver support, oncology rehabilitation, nutrition and exercise and other coping mechanisms that are imperative for a successful survivorship journey.”

For additional information about the Cancer Program at UM Shore Regional Health, or the various support groups and survivorship programs available, call 410-820-6800 or visit them online at umshoreregional.org.

As part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), University of Maryland Shore Regional Health is the principal provider of comprehensive health care services for more than 170,000 residents of Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
