CAMBRIDGE — On Wednesday, Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Principal Jerome Stover and retiring varsity football head coach Gaven Parker announced the appointment of a new leader for the varsity squad. Toby Peer was formally introduced as the leader of the program.

Mr. Parker said, “It’s time to flip the page,” as he spoke about his work with the team over the years. “I’m extremely proud of everything we’ve accomplished, the lives we’ve touched, and the things we’ve done in the community over my time here.”
“I think Coach Peer is going to do a phenomenal job,” Mr. Parker said. “I’ve done everything in my power to make sure that he’s set up for success.”

His preparations were part of a months-long process, as the school looked for the next head coach of the football program, with “the goal of identifying the leader who would take our football program to the next level of excellence,” Mr. Stover said.
“During the search process, one candidate eventually separated himself from the others, due to his deep knowledge of the game, his strategic vision, forward-thinking ideas, strong mentor relationships with former athletes, and a solid commitment to leading C-SD football to a new level of excellence,” Mr. Stover said. “I am pleased to announce that Toby Peer Sr. will be our new head football coach.”

“I am very humbled to be the next football coach,” Mr. Peer said. “I have the utmost respect for Coach Parker.”
Coach Peer said his approach focuses on teaching and mentoring young people, following a single guiding principal — player development. “That’s our job, to get up everyday and be excited about teaching kids,” he said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Coach Peer said he was pleased his family could contribute to the local community. “We’re so very grateful to have that opportunity,” he said.

Other positions announced for the upcoming school year were: Head Coach Jason Shorter, golf; Assistant Dan Catron, unified clinics; Head Coach Brendan Bromwell, boys’ varsity; Head Coach Lauren Blades, cheerleading.
The school is still seeking applicants for varsity wrestling, varsity boys’ assistant, girls’ varsity and junior varsity, JV softball, and girls’ tennis.
