AMERICAN CORNER — The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School football Vikings brought their record to 5-1 in Region 1A East with a 49-14 victory Saturday over Colonel Richardson. The Colonels fell to 1-5.

The Vikings traveled north to face an offense that has been putting points on the board, but a defense that has struggled this year. C-SD’s young defense, however, has dispelled early-season worries and had given up the fewest points in 1A East going into the game, under the leadership of Defensive Coordinator Eric Otey.

The Vikings might have been a bit sleepy, though - they got off to a sluggish start. The Colonel’s running back John Carter ran for a TD, though a muffed extra point made it 6-0, giving Col. Richardson their only lead of the game.

A handoff to Emory Wongus on third and 11 from the 12 scored C-SD’s first points with 4:44 left in the period, which ended 7-6 in favor of the Vikings.

The floodgates opened in the second quarter, with two scores by Viking Tre’ Lake, one by Kairon Nichols, and an electrifying, 85-yard pick-6 by Keonandre Greene. The half ended 35-6 in favor of the visitors.

Tre’ Lake was still on the job in the third quarter, carrying the ball 42 yards for a score, covering the last five yards running backwards in the grasp of a defender.

The final period opened with a score of 42-6, and Viking backups on the field, including Tyler Harding at quarterback and Tajh Molock at running back.

The Colonels’ junior running back Eric Joseph broke free on a 62-yard run to add a TD to the tally with about five minutes left in the game. C-SD responded with another score, this one by Molock behind nice blocking by Aaron Collins.
