Pohl, Brown strong in shot put

SNOW HILL – The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School boys’ and girls’ indoor track and field teams wrapped up their first regular season on Wednesday – now the runners, jumpers and throwers are getting ready for the 1A East Regional Championships on Feb. 6.

Results were also completed for the girls’ Bayside Championships, delayed after last week’s mix up with an underweight implement in the shot put. The event was held again on Wednesday, and after points were compiled, James M. Bennett High School came out on top, with 91.5 points, followed by North Caroline with 85 and Kent Island with 75.

Other Bayside Championship results were: Queen Anne’s 72, Parkside 55.5, Snow Hill 52, Stephen Decatur 42, C-SD 14, Easton 10, Crisfield 5, Mardela 3 and Wicomico 2.

Meets this season have been held at the Worcester County Recreational Center, where schools of all sizes from Maryland and Virginia’s Eastern Shore, as well as Delaware, have competed.

In Wednesday’s regular-season meet, the North Caroline Lady Bulldogs earned first place out of 14 teams that scored with 112 points. C-SD’s girls took seventh, with 30 points.

Viking boys had their best showing yet, placing second with 71 points, behind only Bayside Champion North Caroline’s 96. Thirteen teams scored in the boys’ competition.

In other local results, Easton’s girls were ninth with 19, and the Talbot boys were 12th with 4 points.

In track and field meets with seven or more teams, events are scored down to eight places. The winner earns 10, second gets 8, third 6 and fourth 5, down to eighth place, with 1 point.

It was an exciting day for the Viking strength athletes, whose boys won the shot put. Taylor Pohl came in second with a throw of 36’ 5.5”, while teammate Hunter Brown grabbed fourth with toss of 36’ 2.5”.

Hunter’s throw – or “put”, if we’re being technical about it – represented a personal record, smashing his previous best by 1’ 2”. “It felt so smooth!” he told his cheering teammates after the attempt.

Now the Vikes are looking ahead to Feb. 6 at the Prince George’s County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, where the 1A East Regional Championships will be held.

This region, unlike the regular season, comprises only schools similar in size to C-SD. The Vikings will clash with 16 other schools from the Eastern and Western Shores to determine who’s top dog in the East and who qualifies for the Maryland State 1A Championships on Feb. 20.

The top four finishers in each event at the Regionals will qualify for States. In case of a tie for fourth, all those who tie will also go.

Benchmark times, distances and heights are also set for boys and girls. If an athlete reaches those, regardless of event placing, he or she also earns a trip to the championship.
