CAMBRIDGE — Discipline on defense and patience on offense proved to be an unbeatable combination Tuesday, as the Lady Vikings (5-6) varsity basketball team thumped Colonel Richardson, 62-23.

Starters Ashia Wright, Ashley Pete, Paige Bleyer, Aliya Collins and JaZhana Butler took control at the opening tip-off, leading the Vikes to a dominating lead - when Paige hit a 3-pointer with 1:30 left in the first quarter, the score was 16-1.

Coach Bruce Springer, who led the team with Coach Jason Bleyer, instructed his girls in how to respond to the determined efforts of the visiting Colonels.

“Remember the ball fake against an aggressive team,” he said, as he demonstrated how to deceive a lunging opponent. Coach Springer also told the girls that with a comfortable lead, their most effective strategy was not to chase points, but to maintain possession of the ball.

The Viking girls did hold on to the ball, but the points kept coming, with sophomore JaZhana running the show under the basket and Ashia grabbing passes and scoring a couple buckets of her own.

With a lead of 33-6 as the clock neared 0:00 in the second quarter, Aliya held on to the ball for a final shot. Some fancy ball handling and racing in a tight circle had the crowd laughing and cheering as the senior tossed up a shot for the half’s final score.

Colonel’s energetic play in the third quarter gained them 8 points, but the Vikings were busy racking up 16 of their own, for their most productive quarter of the night.

It was 51-14 as the final period began. Sophomore Tiaziah Wright drained a 3-pointer and junior Brooke Webster added two baskets to help bring the final tally to 62-23.

The game’s top scorers were JaZhana Butler, 15; Aliya Collins, 10; and Ashia Wright, Dazjane Johnson, Ashley Pete and Paige Bleyer with 6 each.

* In other basketball news, the C-SD boys’ teams traveled to Colonel Richardson on Tuesday. The varsity squad lost, 52-32, while the Vikings’ junior varsity boys came out on top, 58-54.
