C-SD seniors will present ‘Shrek the Musical’

CAMBRIDGE — The Cambridge- South Dorchester High School class of 2019 will present “Shrek the Musical” on March 14 through 17, one of the most technically involved shows that C-SD has ever produced. Shrek features many elaborate sets, extensive character makeup, and a giant dragon, just to name a few of the surprises in store for audiences.

C-SD Theater Teacher Mike James said the costumes and especially the makeup were a challenge - in fact, as something of a Jack-of-all-trades, he applies makeup and prosthetics in a complex process to transform senior Connor McCroy into the character Shrek. “This one character is easily the most difficult one I’ve ever done,” Mr. James said.

It is the tale of an ogre named Shrek, who lives happily by himself in his swamp, until a group of fairy tale creatures asks for his help against their persecutor, the evil Lord Farquaad. Shrek agrees to help them, and during his adventures falls in love with Fiona.

“Since rehearsals began in January, this year’s cast has been hard at work learning songs, dialogue, and dances to create believable characters that will bring the story of Shrek to life,” Mr. James said in a statement to the Banner.

In addition to Shrek, the musical contains four other ogres, a talking donkey, a princess, an evil dwarf, and numerous fairy tale creatures, all of which require varying degrees of specialty makeup and costuming effects.

Shrek the Musical opens on March 14 in C-SD’s auditorium and promises to be entertaining for audiences of all ages. Show times are: March 14, 15, 16 at 7 p.m.; March 16 at 2 p.m.; and March 17 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10.
