Businesses, galleries prepare for Oct. 14 ‘ARTober’

CAMBRIDGE – Downtown businesses host a special Second Saturday, on Oct. 14, 5 – 8 p.m., called “ARTober.” All are welcome to visit for a fun and art-filled stroll through downtown. Highlights include chalk artwork along the sidewalks, a performance by Tommy Buckets, receptions at galleries and shops, live musical performances, and more.

Calista’s Boutique, now in residence downtown at 406 Race St., will host Tommy Buckets, a Dorchester County native now touring with his interactive performance using 3 gallon buckets and more.

In the galleries, Main Street Gallery, located at 518 Poplar St., hosts their Second Saturday reception plus a potter’s wheel demonstration outside. Their current gallery show features a celebration of 5 years in operation. Dorchester Center for the Arts, 321 High St., hosts their Community Photography and Digital Arts Exhibit and Competition. Cash prizes will be awarded in each division for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Cash prizes will also be awarded for Best Use of Light (one award for each division). Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held as part of Second Saturday on Oct. 14, 5-7:30 p.m.

Businesses will also be jazzing up the sidewalks with unique chalk art in front of their shops, hosting receptions for Second Saturday strollers, and featuring special Second Saturday sales. Thomas’s Fine Jewelry, 525 Poplar St., will host local craft artist Kateri Chen. Butterfly Boutique and Sunnyside Shop have special sales and receptions. The High Spot features an outdoor display of the work of Chris Hubbard, local spray paint artist. Stop by Jewelry by Cottage Studio, 410 Race St., to learn more about their jewelry making classes. The Wine Bar, will have their Second Saturday wine tasting reception.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Black Water Bakery located at 429 Race St. sponsors a special benefit for “Women Supporting Women” fundraiser between 5– 9 p.m. The event includes live music, specialty drinks, dinner and desserts.

Looking for something fun to do in celebration of Autumn? The Robin Hood Shop will hold a fun and festive pumpkin decorating contest with prizes!
