CAMBRIDGE – In a statement released late Monday morning, the Maryland State Police (MSP) said a suspect has been charged with attempted murder of a Cambridge police officer. The incident occurred early Thursday morning, when a resident of St. Clair Avenue called police to report that her son was chasing his naked girlfriend down the street.

When police arrived, the girlfriend's car was reported as stolen. The driver led police on a pursuit before ignoring commands to stop, the MSP statement said. He drove directly at and struck a Cambridge police officer, the statement continued. The officer fired his service weapon and struck the driver. The man has been charged while he remains under guard in a hospital where he is being treated.

The suspect is identified as Armand J. Cornish, 27, of Cambridge. He is charged on an arrest warrant with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault (two counts), second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, unauthorized removal of property and theft between $1,500 and $25,000.

The Cambridge officer has not yet been named. He was reported to have been treated in Cambridge and released. He was placed on paid administrative leave, pending an internal investigation.

Sgt. DaVaughn Parker of the MSP said on Friday that in cases such as this, two investigations are conducted - a criminal one, by the state police, and a probe into the officer's actions. "Once the investigation is concluded, we're going to take everything we have and give it to the State's Attorney's Office," he said.

The identity of the girlfriend has been withheld, Sgt. Parker said, because she is a victim.

The warrant was served on Cornish on the afternoon of July 3, 2018, at the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he continues to be a patient. A court commissioner ordered Cornish held without bail and he remains in Maryland Division of Correction custody at the hospital.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was requested by the Cambridge Police Department to investigate the police-involved shooting involving an officer from that department the occurred early on the morning of June 29, 2018. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to the Dorchester County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

The investigation is continuing.
