Bayside Athletic Conference releases pandemic rules

Games ok, but spectators limited

CAMBRIDGE — Classes in the county’s public schools have resumed in-person instruction for many students, and sports are ready to begin shortened seasons. The moves have taken place as progress against the COVID-19 pandemic continue.

But restrictions will be in force at the games, as a way to continue fighting the highly contagious disease. Last week, the Bayside Athletic Conference sent guidelines to schools for spectators at all athletic events through April 17.
Sports will continue for the best interest of the students, but won’t always be available for spectators. Key points in the guidelines are:

• Facilities will NOT be open to the General Public.
• Fall athletes will be allowed limited spectators at home events, based on local guidelines.
• Everyone attending a game must follow all rules of the host facility, including health screenings, wearing face mask, and following social distancing protocol, unless living in the same household.
• Fans are asked not to attend if they are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
• Individual schools will determine if concessions stands will be open. That information will be shared at the school level.
• No guests or spectators for visiting teams will be permitted to attend.
• Credentialed media and college coaches who are recruiting are welcome, but must notify in advance and sign in at the main gate. Full identification/credentials are required.
Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Athletic Director Kareem Falcon Otey said she wants no issues at the gate, adding, “Dorchester will only be allowing two spectators per player/cheerleader to enter any events being held at our schools. Bring debit/credit cards, as we are not using cash. C-SD’s concession stand will be open with a limited menu. No visiting team spectators allowed. Games will be live streamed on Facebook. More info will be sent with your player.”

DCPS Supervisor of Athletics Dr. Derek Sabedra posted a message on Feb. 28, further noting expections of the Bayside Conference. These include:
• No more than 100 people for indoor events such as volleyball and 250 for outdoor events.
-All fans will need to sit in the bleachers on social distanced markings. No standing allowed on the fencing or in the aisles.
-Fans/guests are not allowed in the facility until 30 minutes before the game/event begins (gates must remain closed and locked until the Game Day Administration staff is prepared to begin the check-in process).
-Fans/guests are not allowed anywhere but in the stands, bathrooms, or concession stand.
-Bathroom entrances will be monitored and the capacity limits will be enforced (masks are required, 4-6 people).
-Those patrons who violate the safety protocols will be asked to leave respectfully.
