SYKESVILLE - August W. Meyer, 85, died Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Carroll Hospice Dove House, Westminster.
He was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Cambridge, the son of the late August George William Henry Meyer and Bessie May Windsor Meyer.
Mr. Meyer was the husband of Merle Hall McGinnis of Sykesville, whom he married in 1991, and the late Bettie Anderson Meyer, who he married Oct. 21, 1946. She passed away in 1989.
He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938 and joined the U.S. Marines in March 1941. He was a sergeant in the 1st Marine Division, 7th Regiment, Weapons Company. During World War II, he served in Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and New Guinea, and received an honorable discharge in September 1945.
Mr. Meyer earned a bachelor of science in radio engineering from Tri-Sate College in Angola, Ind. He earned a master of science degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He served over 30 years as an electrical engineer for Westinghouse Corp.
While with Westinghouse, Mr. Meyer worked on the communications for the Apollo space program and he was on the team that designed the AWACS radar system.
In 1964 the family moved to Windsor Forest Farm in Sykesville. He enjoyed working the land and raising beef cattle. He also enjoyed baseball and was an avid golfer.
Surviving in addition to his second wife, are daughter Stephanie Briggs and her husband, Loyd of Malad, Idaho; a son, Martin W. Meyer and his wife, Patti of Sykesville; a son, Wayde A. Meyer and his wife, Betty of Biglerville, Pa.; a daughter, Cynthia J. Pickett and her husband, Dave of Taneytown; sisters Esther, Bessie and Mary; brothers, Donald and Windsor; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. Burial will follow in Springfield Cemetery, Sykesville.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation, 200 Memorial Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
