Sea level rise is reshaping a California beach town and threatening a key rail line
SUMMARY: The beach in this small Southern California community has been shrinking due to rising ocean waters. San Clemente's North Beach is now split and officials have used rocks to shore up a seaside rail line. But residents say the structure is making erosion worse and more sand is needed to nourish the beach. The city's residents will vote in November on a proposal for a 1% sales tax addition to help pay for more sand. The vote comes as many California communities are bracing for flooding and landslides ahead of this year’s expected super El Niño.

Powerful nor’easter floods Northeast, leaves over 130,000 without power as high tides threaten coast
SUMMARY: A powerful, slow-moving nor’easter continued to batter the Northeast on Sunday, leaving more than 130,000 customers without power and threatening coastal communities with another round of flooding at high tide. The storm remained just south of Long Island and east of northern New Jersey and was expected to linger in the region for about another day. Forecasters said the worst remaining rainfall would stretch from northern New Jersey through New York City and Long Island into southern New England. The storm killed a New York City housing authority worker Saturday and has flooded roads, disrupted air travel and cut off highway access to Hatteras Island.

Kean returned to Congress after an unexplained absence. Now it's time for his first and only debate
SUMMARY: It's the first and only campaign debate in a New Jersey congressional race that's drawn much interest. Republican Tom Kean Jr. was away from the House for four months this year without explanation until he disclosed he was being treated for depression. His opponent is Democrat Rebecca Bennett. She's a political newcomer who's a former Navy pilot and also worked as a healthcare executive. The 7th Congressional District includes President Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf club. The district has changed party control in each of the past two midterm elections. The debate is Sunday night.

Supreme Court vote shadows Maine Sen. Susan Collins in her first bid after abortion rights decision
SUMMARY: As Maine Republican Susan Collins seeks a sixth Senate term, some voters are bringing up her 2018 vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court justice. He was part of the court's conservative majority that overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion in 2022. This election year, Democrat Troy Jackson is hoping there are enough voters upset at Collins' approval of President Donald Trump's nominee to help oust the veteran lawmaker. Despite Collins' moderate stance and past endorsements from Planned Parenthood, the Kavanaugh vote remains controversial. But on the campaign issues, many Maine voters say the economy is their top concern.

'Lower 48' is a phrase to fight over in Alaska. It's a fixture in the state's US Senate contest
SUMMARY: The most biting insult in Alaska politics is to be accused of being aligned with the “Lower 48." That's code for candidates taking marching orders from powerful forces in the contiguous United States rather than sticking up for Alaskans. It's being used heavily by the major campaigns in the U.S. Senate race. Republican incumbent Dan Sullivan lumps Democrat Mary Peltola in with “Lower 48 liberals” who've opposed expanded oil and gas drilling. Peltola says she'll take on "anyone in the Lower 48 who doesn’t understand what Alaska needs.” The pejorative label can be traced to Alaska's relative isolation and sometimes fraught relationship with the federal government over development of its natural resources.

Kennedy Center put off planned repairs despite known structural issues, former employees allege
SUMMARY: Some former Kennedy Center employees are accusing officials at the performing arts venue of long knowing about structural issues they recently cited as new problems. The anonymous whistleblowers allege in a letter to Congress that top Kennedy Center official Matt Floca halted a funded plan to address roofing issues in April. Floca denies that and says recent investigations revealed new hazards at the building. The center closed temporarily in September as officials cited safety risks from structural deterioration. A judge has ordered a status report by Friday on the temporary closure.

House Democrats plan vast oversight of Trump administration. Impeachment is an option
SUMMARY: House Democrats are preparing a vast oversight agenda if the party sweeps control in the November elections. They're planning investigations of President Donald Trump, his family and his administration, as well as alleged corporate wrongdoing. Being in the majority means bigger budgets and committee staff, along with the ability to investigate, subpoena and course-correct what the Democrats say are widespread abuses of power and corruption. Impeachment of the president and Cabinet officials isn't off the table. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is in line to become speaker if Democrats win the House. CNN says it was left off Air Force One for Trump's Saturday trip to a college football game
SUMMARY: CNN says it has been left off Air Force One for President Donald Trump’s Saturday trip to a college football game. It is the latest media restriction imposed by the administration in an ongoing dispute with First Amendment implications. CNN reported Saturday that it had been scheduled to travel with the president. According to White House guidance, CNN was replaced by the conservative Real America’s Voice News. The news came Friday night just after journalists from CNN and two other outlets that Trump banned last week from the White House grounds returned to the executive complex. Trump traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee, for a game between Tennessee and Texas.

SUMMARY: UK police have arrested five men near an air base used by the US during its war against Iran. They're suspected of preparing a terrorist act. The Metropolitan Police, leading the investigation, said the men were initially arrested under the Explosives Act. Police received a call about three suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford. The men were arrested in the Whelford area. A 400-meter cordon is in place, and around 85 households have been evacuated. The situation appears contained, but the proximity to the base has raised speculation about a connection. The arrests come amid heightened tensions with hostile states.

UN speakers' go-to quotes: Ancient texts, modern greats and a little Talking Heads
SUMMARY: Presidents, premiers, monarchs and cabinet ministers have plenty to say at their annual gathering at the U.N. General Assembly. One even slipped in a bit of Talking Heads. We're talking the new wave band, not TV pundits. Early results show Swiss voters are on track to reject a push to tighten neutrality rules
SUMMARY: Early projections suggest Swiss voters are on track to reject a right-wing proposal aimed at the strict implementation of the country’s neutrality. The proposal, backed by the Swiss People’s Party, claims the government is too close to the EU and NATO, especially regarding Russia's war in Ukraine. It follows Switzerland's decision to join EU sanctions against Russia and aims to prohibit joining punitive measures except UN sanctions. Projections indicate more than two-thirds of voters rejected the idea. Supporters argue it protects security and independence, while opponents say the constitution already allows for national interest protection. A final count is expected later Sunday.

The energy crisis is hitting rural France hard where public transport is limited. Rio residents find their own way to tackle gangs as crime dominates Brazil’s election
SUMMARY: Crime is a key issue in Brazil's upcoming Oct. 4 election. The country's current approach to fighting crime favors armed confrontations between police and criminal groups.
