3 firefighters killed in blazes along Colorado-Utah border are identified
SUMMARY: Federal officials say that the three firefighters killed over the weekend in a Colorado wildfire were part of a crew that goes into remote areas to quickly put out new fires. The firefighters were killed and two others suffered burns when they were overcome Saturday by flames after deploying emergency shelters to shield themselves from fast-moving fires. The U.S. Forest Service identified the firefighters killed in Colorado as Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan; Nick Hutcherson, 27 of Glendale, Arizona; and Sydney Watson, 26, of Warrior, Alabama. Wildfires have erupted over the past week across the West, fueled by months of dry weather.

Alex Murdaugh's true crime saga continues as he's back in court for hearing on his murder retrial
SUMMARY: Alex Murdaugh's retrial on murder changes in the killings of his wife and son has begun with a pretrial hearing. Monday's hearing aims to set deadlines for evidence exchange and schedule future proceedings. Media outlets have flocked to cover the case again after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned his convictions and life sentence. Murdaugh's lawyers want him to appear in civilian clothes and without shackles. Murdaugh remains in prison serving 40 years for financial crimes. But he continues to adamantly deny the shooting deaths of his wife and son at their home in 2021.

Former NBA players Malik Beasley, Ed Davis are latest to be charged in gambling scandal
SUMMARY: Former NBA players Malik Beasley and Ed Davis have been indicted in the latest round of charges in the government’s gambling investigation. Authorities say Beasley tailored his play while with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024, based on bets on his performance, and others benefited, including Davis. Six people were named in the indictment returned in Brooklyn. Authorities say the scheme involved hundreds of thousands of dollars. There was no immediate comment from lawyers for Beasley and Davis.

Thousands of immigrants got scammed by an attorney exploiting humanitarian visas, lawsuits say
SUMMARY: An attorney in Washington state promised “miracles” to tens of thousands of immigrants seeking legal status. Instead, lawsuits and a legal ethics investigation say her firm fabricated abuse or human trafficking claims about clients in order to apply for humanitarian visas. The lawsuits say this was all done without her clients' knowledge. In June, Alexandra Lozano's law firm shut down after the state bar accused her of misconduct. Lozano has denied wrongdoing but permanently surrendered her law license. Federal data shows immigration service scams are rising, however Lozano’s alleged scheme stands out for its massive scale. She is accused of building an assembly-line system to churn through visa applications, hiring unlicensed staff abroad to provide legal advice.

FACT FOCUS: A look at the Trump administration's challenge to birthright citizenship
SUMMARY: When it comes to birthright citizenship, the Trump administration hasn’t been subtle about its views. The practice, which grants automatic citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil, is “a disgrace,” according to President Donald Trump. He has repeatedly, and falsely, said the U.S. is the only country that has it. The Supreme Court is expected to address the issue in the coming days, ruling on a Trump executive order that would upend more than a century of constitutional and legal history. To Trump, birthright citizenship is a “magnet for illegal immigration,” with administration officials often pointing to illegal “birth tourism” networks that arrange for non-U.S. citizens to come to the country solely to give birth.

3 firefighters killed in Colorado as wildfires stoked by heat, wind rage across the West
SUMMARY: Three firefighters have died and two were injured while battling fires on the Colorado-Utah border. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service says they were responding to the Knowles and Gore fires on Saturday. Wildfire activity has intensified across the Western U.S. due to hot, dry, and windy weather. The largest blaze, the Cottonwood Fire, has grown to over 146 square miles in southwest Utah. Utah's governor declared an emergency earlier this week, and Colorado's governor on Saturday followed suit and authorized the National Guard to help. Conditions have been critical, with record-low snowpack and extreme drought fueling the fires.

Heat wave and high humidity will blast much of the eastern US this week, meteorologists say
SUMMARY: A heat wave will blast the eastern United States this week. The National Weather Service says temperatures rising ahead of the July Fourth holiday will feel hotter because of the high humidity that’s arriving with it. The weather service says several days of high temperatures will settle in across the lower Great Lakes, the mid-Atlantic and the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys. That's expected to last into next weekend across the Great Plains, Southeast and mid-Atlantic. Temperatures will reach well into the 90s and low 100 degrees F. Some cities could see their highest temperatures of the year so far as they host World Cup matches and celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.

Supreme Court rejects Trump’s push to toss $5 million verdict in E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse case
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court is rejecting a push by President Donald Trump to throw out a jury’s $5 million finding that he sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York City department store in the mid-1990s and later defamed her. Trump’s lawyers had challenged the judge’s decision to allow testimony from two other women who accused Trump of sexual abuse decades ago, allegations the Republican president has denied. Carroll’s lawyers urged the justices to pass on the case, arguing the lower-court decisions were in line with others around the country. The decision comes about two years after the court granted Trump broad immunity from criminal prosecution.

Supreme Court says Fed’s Cook can keep her job for now, but it upholds other Trump firings
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court says Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook can remain in her job for now, a rebuke to President Donald Trump’s bid to wrest control of the nation’s central bank. At the same time, the justices Monday dramatically expanded presidential power, upholding the Republican president's firings of the heads of other independent federal agencies. Trump says it's a “Historic and Unprecedented Ruling.” But the court rejected a Trump plea to immediately remove Cook from the Fed based on allegations she committed mortgage fraud, which she denies. Cook says the case was about her refusal to bow to political pressure in setting interest rates. Cook was nominated by then-President Joe Biden, a Democrat.

Americans' pride in US history and democracy drops, and fewer are proud to be American, polls find
SUMMARY: A new AP-NORC poll finds that Americans have grown less proud of the country’s history or the way its democracy works over the past several years. Americans’ pride in the U.S. on several key attributes has dropped since 2017. That includes Americans' pride in the nation’s military and its political influence around the globe. Much of the declining positivity comes from Democrats, who polling suggests have become increasingly disenchanted with the United States in the years since President Donald Trump was first elected. A new Gallup poll also finds that overall pride in being American has fallen to a record low. Despite the drops in pride, most adults living in the U.S. say being an American is “extremely” or “very” important to their identity.

Supreme Court rules states can count late-arriving mailed ballots, rejecting Trump-led challenge
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court is rejecting a Republican-led attack on state laws that allow the counting of late-arriving mail ballots, a target of President Donald Trump. Monday's 5-4 decision leaves in place laws in more than half the states and the District of Columbia that permit mailed ballots to arrive and be counted days after an election, provided they're postmarked by Election Day. The outcome spares officials the headache of changing ballot rules just months before the 2026 midterm congressional elections. The legal challenge was part of the Republican president's broader attack on most mail balloting, which he says breeds fraud despite strong evidence to the contrary and years of experience in numerous states.

The Supreme Court nears the end of its term with momentous cases about Trump's power to be decided
SUMMARY: The Supreme Court is wrapping up a term that has focused on President Donald Trump’s expansive claims of presidential power. Trump’s efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, fire the heads of most independent agencies at will and remove a sitting Federal Reserve governor are among the remaining eight cases the justices are expected to decide this week, beginning Monday. The court also is weighing, in cases from West Virginia and Idaho, whether to uphold laws in roughly half the states that prohibit transgender girls and women from playing on their public school and college sports. America split from monarchy 250 years ago. Trump's presidency is testing how far it's come
SUMMARY: America is getting ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary since it split from Britain's monarchy and embarked on its experiment in democracy. Donald Trump's presidency is drawing comparisons to the king whose rule inspired the American Revolution. Trump has claimed an unprecedented amount of power for himself and has been largely unchecked by a friendly Republican-controlled Congress. He's turned the Justice Department against his political enemies, leveraged the presidency to enrich himself and his family, sent the military onto city streets and pushed to seize authority that the Constitution gives to the states. Still, Trump has said he doesn't see himself as a king or dictator.

After an earthquake, how long can trapped victims survive?
SUMMARY: For those trapped in rubble after an earthquake, survival depends on many factors, including weather and access to water and air. Experts say victims can survive for a week or more if their injuries aren’t too severe and the weather isn’t too hot or cold. Most rescues happen in the 24 hours after a disaster. The chances of survival drop with each day after that. Trapped victims are more likely to survive if they are in a debris-free pocket that prevents major injury. Beyond that, having air to breathe and water to drink are crucial.
