Police search for suspects in Ohio shooting that wounded 12 people near a street festival
SUMMARY: Authorities say a shooting near a busy street festival in Ohio has wounded at least 12 people. Toledo police say the shooting happened Saturday near the Old West End Festival, an annual gathering of live music and home tours in a historic district. Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan says it appears that at least two people fired weapons and they were “probably shooting at each other.” Heffernan also says two of the victims are in critical condition. Police are searching for suspects with nobody yet in custody. Officials have urged people who were at the festival to come forward with any photos or videos on their phones for possible leads.

Trump dismisses idea that Iran betrays his 'no new wars' campaign message
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is dismissing the idea that launching the war with Iran betrayed his refrain of “No new wars” as he campaigned for the White House in 2024. He tells NBC's “Meet the Press” that he “didn’t guarantee” there would be no wars if elected again. Trump also defended plans for a $1.8 billion fund that would have compensated allies of the Republican president. And in the interview aired Sunday, he repeated his baseless claims of mass fraud in California’s drawn-out vote count from Tuesday’s primary. He ended the interview when he became frustrated with pushback from NBC’s Kristen Welker.

First came Congress. Now a national redistricting battle may turn to statehouses and city councils
SUMMARY: A national redistricting battle is about to enter a new phase. Several states already have redrawn congressional districts to create a partisan advantage in the November elections. Now, Georgia's Republican-led Legislature will convene June 17 to draw new districts for the 2028 elections not only for Congress, but also for state legislative seats. Mississippi Republicans are also planning to draw new districts before their 2027 legislative elections. It remains to be seen whether more state legislatures and local governments will try to redraw districts in light of a recent Supreme Court decision weakening the federal Voting Rights Act.

The race between Sand and Republican Zach Lahn is expected to be highly competitive. Both candidates focus on issues like a struggling agricultural economy and a rising cancer crisis. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear supports Sand, believing he can flip the seat by prioritizing people over party. Sand, who dislikes partisanship, aims for balanced government in Iowa. Beshear, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, will campaign with Sand and other Democratic candidates in Iowa.

Female Navy officers say they fear a career cap after Hegseth cuts women from promotions list
SUMMARY: Several female Navy officers say they see Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's recent intervention in a promotions list as a sign their careers now have a ceiling. The Navy had selected 31 sailors to promote from the rank of captain to one-star admiral, but Hegseth cut nine people, including all three women, from the list. That's according to a defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss information not permitted to be released publicly. The Associated Press spoke with eight female Navy officers of varying ranks and time in service. They say they now worry for the future generation of female military leaders.

Israel strikes Beirut's southern suburbs days after US-supported ceasefire deal
SUMMARY: Israel has struck Beirut's southern suburbs without warning, defying a U.S. request not to attack Lebanon's capital. The strikes come days after a ceasefire agreement in Washington. Iran had warned that an attack on Beirut would renew full-scale war across the Mideast. Iran’s powerful parliament speaker hints at retaliation. Two people are reported killed in Beirut and others hurt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office says the strikes were in retaliation for the Iranian-backed Hezbollah firing at northern Israel. Hezbollah did not immediately claim responsibility for that. The White House hasn't commented. The fighting in Lebanon threatens efforts to end the Iran war.

With rising crime on their minds, Peruvians to vote for president yet again

The results are expected to be close, and official outcomes may take days. Crime, especially extortion, is a major concern. Fujimori promises a tough stance on crime, while Sánchez focuses on police reform and economic progress. Voting is mandatory for Peruvians aged 18 to 70.

Health workers at the epicenter of Congo's Ebola outbreak labor with little pay or rest
SUMMARY: Health workers inside the epicenter of Congo's outbreak say they are working with little pay or rest. The mining town of Mongbwalu attracts a huge number of laborers for large gold mines who live in crowded mining camps. That makes the transmission of the disease easier. The virus spreads through close contact with sick or deceased patients’ bodily fluids. Congolese authorities said Sunday that there are 488 confirmed cases including 86 deaths. The Central African nation on Thursday recorded 71 new cases. Authorities say that's a sign of active community transmission. There have been 19 confirmed cases and two deaths in neighboring Uganda.

The main political parties failed to agree on a new president by a March deadline. The prolonged crisis has hurt Kosovo’s economy, already struggling with the global energy crisis. Prime Minister Albin Kurti’s party holds a clear majority, but electing a president requires broader consensus. The opposition accuses Kurti of trying to control all political institutions. Palestinians suffer from lack of proper toilets across Gaza's vast tent cities
SUMMARY: There is not a single proper toilet across the vast tent cities housing most of Gaza’s 1.7 million Palestinians left homeless by the war. Displaced families have largely been left on their own to dig their own latrines, some shared by extended families. The improper cesspits spread foul odors and pools of sewage. At communal camp toilets, people wait in long lines then do their business behind a thin cloth separating them from the crowd of strangers outside. Women fear walking to the communal toilets at night. Mostafa Shaaban dug a latrine in a corner of his tent close to where his family sleeps and eats.

From unfilled gas tanks to fewer frills, retailers see US consumers rethink their spending
SUMMARY: U.S. consumers haven’t stopped spending since the Iran war drove up fuel prices. But company executives and retail analysts say many shoppers are reassessing what they buy and where. The behavior changes observed so far are subtle. They include drivers flocking to the fuel pumps at warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, but not filling up their tanks all the way. Market research firms say foot traffic is down at clothing and electronics stores. Executives from Walmart, McDonald’s and Dollar General have reported noticeable cutbacks by lower-income customers.
