Memorial services for Jesse Jackson begin at Chicago headquarters of his civil rights organization
SUMMARY: Memorial services for the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. begin in Chicago and stretch across the country to honor his long civil rights legacy. Starting Thursday, he lies in repose for two days at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters. Events also take place in Washington, D.C., and in South Carolina, where he was born and began his activism. Jackson died last week at 84 after a rare neurological disorder limited his mobility and speech. Tributes have spread worldwide. Chicago's L trains have used digital screens to display Jackson’s portrait and his well-known mantra, “I am Somebody!” His family says the services are open to all.

Third victim dies from wounds suffered in Rhode Island ice rink attack, police say
SUMMARY: Officials say a third victim has died from injuries sustained during a deadly shooting at a youth hockey game in Rhode Island. Pawtucket police said Wednesday that Gerald Dorgan has died. He had been in critical condition following last week’s shooting at an ice rink. His daughter, Rhonda Dorgan, and adult grandson, Aidan Dorgan, were also killed in the shooting. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien says he was heartbroken that another person has died because of the shooting. Police have identified the shooter as 56-year-old Robert Dorgan. The shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Robert Dorgan’s ex-wife was Rhonda Dorgan and adult son was Aidan Dorgan.

No-parking zone in Nancy Guthrie’s neighborhood widened amid complaints about journalists, streamers
SUMMARY: The no-parking zone around the home of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother where journalists and social media streamers have stationed themselves over the past three weeks since her disappearance is being widened. The change is being made in response to complaints from neighbors about congested roads, trespassing and trash left along roadways. County officials say an effort over the weekend to have one-way traffic flow on the road in front of Nancy Guthrie’s house hasn’t worked as they hoped. Authorities say journalists and streamers can still have access to the area, but they will have to park elsewhere and get dropped off in the neighborhood.

Residents want local governments to end contracts that let ICE train on their gun ranges
SUMMARY: Residents in a Southern California city want local police to stop letting federal immigration agents train at a publicly owned firing range. Some residents of Escondido say Immigration and Customs Enforcement has changed by donning masks and using hard-handed tactics in raids that turned deadly in such places as Minneapolis and Chicago. They don't want to give agents a reason to come to their city. They packed a City Council meeting Wednesday to discuss the arrangement. Similar debates have sprung up in various communities since the Trump administration has ramped up immigration enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security didn't comment on the local backlash.

The nature of the federal investigation involving the nation’s second-largest school district and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho's home was not immediately clear. Affidavits laying out details for the basis for Wednesday's searches were under seal. The Los Angeles district said in a statement that it “is cooperating with the investigation and we do not have further information at this time.” A third location near Miami was also searched. Power outages, piles of snow vexing parts of Northeast in snowstorm aftermath
SUMMARY: Power failures and waist-high canyons of snow bedeviled parts of the Northeast in the aftermath of a massive storm that dumped piles on streets and sidewalks from Maryland Maine, even as fresh snowfall coated the region. Across the Northeast, the fallout from the storm persisted: In Rhode Island, where 3 feet (0.9 meters) of snow surpassed the record set in the Blizzard of 1978, people confronted a third straight day stuck at home as residential streets remained unplowed, trash pickup got postponed in some places and some schools went virtual. In Massachusetts, particularly in Cape Cod where nearly 145,000 were without power, utility crews worked 18-hour shifts to restore electricity.

What to know about the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning after college student’s death
SUMMARY: A Rhode Island college football player has died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning after running his car to charge his phone. On Monday, first responders found 21-year-old Joseph Boutros unresponsive in his car during a major snowstorm and power outage. Police say snow blocked the exhaust pipe and fumes built up around the vehicle. Salve Regina University says Boutros is a sophomore lineman and a beloved teammate. Experts say carbon monoxide risks rise in winter and during outages. The gas has no smell or color. It can cause headaches, confusion, sleepiness and death.

Hillary Clinton testifies she has no information on Epstein's crimes and doesn't recall meeting him
SUMMARY: Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told U.S. House lawmakers in New York she has no knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes and doesn't recall ever meeting him. Thursday's testimony comes at the start of two days of depositions that will include former President Bill Clinton. The depositions are in the Clintons’ hometown of Chappaqua, north of New York City. The depositions come after months of tense back-and-forth with the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee. Hillary Clinton has said the Democratic couple's knowledge of Epstein is “very limited.” Bill Clinton has not been accused of wrongdoing in his relationship with Epstein. But Republicans have long wanted to press the Clintons for answers.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia asks US judge in Tennessee to dismiss his criminal case, saying it's vindictive
SUMMARY: Kilmar Abrego Garcia has arrived at a Tennessee federal courthouse where his attorneys are trying to prove criminal charges against him are vindictive and should be dismissed. The Salvadoran citizen was mistakenly deported last year in violation of a court order. Abrego Garcia was eventually returned to the U.S. only to face human smuggling charges. A federal judge determined some Trump administration officials made statements about Abrego Garcia that are cause for concern. At a Thursday hearing in Nashville, Abrego Garcia will try to prove the animus of those officials is what motivated the charges against him. Abrego Garcia immigrated to the U.S. illegally and has lived and worked in Maryland for years.

What Americans think about Trump's judgment on military force as Iran talks resume: new AP-NORC poll
SUMMARY: A new AP-NORC poll finds that as the U.S. and Iran head into their next round of nuclear talks in Geneva, many U.S. adults continue to view Iran’s nuclear program as a threat. At the same time, few Americans have high trust in President Donald Trump’s judgment on the use of military force abroad. The survey was conducted Feb. 19-23, as military tensions built in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran. It found about half of U.S. adults are “extremely” or “very” concerned Iran’s nuclear program poses a direct threat to the U.S., but only about one-quarter say they have high trust in Trump on relationships with adversaries or the use of military force abroad.

FBI fires agents who worked on Trump classified document investigation, AP sources say
SUMMARY: The FBI has fired additional agents who worked on an investigation into President Donald Trump, this time terminating employees who participated in the probe into the Republican’s hoarding of classified documents. That's according to people familiar with the matter. The firings disclosed Wednesday are part of a broader personnel purge under the leadership of Director Kash Patel, a Trump appointee who, over the last year, has pushed out dozens of employees who either contributed to investigations of the president or who were perceived as not in alignment with the administration’s agenda. The announcement Wednesday comes after several news organizations reported that records involving uncorroborated accusations made by a woman against President Donald Trump were not among those released to the public. The reports say the Justice Department did not release some summaries of interviews that the FBI conducted with an unidentified woman who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by both Trump and Epstein when she was a minor in the 1980s. US and Iran hold another round of indirect nuclear talks as American forces mass in Mideast
SUMMARY: Iran and the United States are holding another round of indirect talks in Geneva. Thursday's negotiations are aimed at reaching a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program and potentially averting another war as the U.S. gathers a massive fleet of aircraft and warships in the Middle East. Iran would be outgunned in any war with the US but could still inflict considerable pain
SUMMARY: Iran’s military capabilities were badly degraded by 12 days of Israeli and U.S. strikes last year. But analysts say it could still inflict pain on American forces and allies in response to another U.S. attack. Iran has a large supply of missiles capable of hitting American bases in the Middle East or Israel. Iranian officials have named both as targets if attacked. Iran may opt for greater retaliation than it did last year, especially if its leaders feel the Islamic Republic is at risk of being overthrown. Iran also has the ability to disrupt trade in the Strait of Hormuz. That's a key waterway for global oil.

The alerts will only go to parents who are enrolled in Instagram's parental supervision program. Instagram says it already blocks such content from showing up in teen accounts' search results and directs people to helplines instead. The announcement Thursday comes as Meta faces two trials over harms to children. A trial underway in Los Angeles questions whether Meta’s platforms deliberately addict and harm children. Another, in New Mexico, seeks to determine whether Meta failed to protect children from sexual exploitation on its platforms.

Trump's portrayal of 'golden age' is out of sync with how Americans see economy
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump sought in his first State of the Union address to sell Americans on the idea of a booming economy, falling prices, and soaring jobs, yet he faces a skeptical public with a much gloomier view. Barely 12 hours before his speech, in fact, The Conference Board, a business research group, released its latest consumer confidence report. It showed that overall confidence in the economy remains historically low, and is barely above the level it plunged to in the depths of the COVID recession. Other polling has yielded similar results: Only 39% of Americans approve of Trump’s economic leadership, according to the latest Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research survey.

A Boston Celtics game-inspired friction test finally pinned down the sneaker squeak
SUMMARY: A new study uses physics to uncover why sneakers squeak on the basketball court. Scientists slid a shoe against a smooth glass plate over and over, filming it and recording the squeaking sounds with a microphone. As the shoe works hard to keep its grip, the sole changes shape thousands of times per second as it momentarily loses and then regains contact with the floor at a frequency that matches the pitch of the loud squeak we hear. These insights can help scientists understand essential questions about friction, which has important practical applications. The study was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
