Suspect in shooting of National Guard members now facing a first-degree murder charge
SUMMARY: The charges against the man who authorities say shot two National Guard members have been upgraded to first-degree murder after one of the soldiers died. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, announced the new charge Friday. Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, were critically injured in Wednesday's shooting in the nation’s capital. President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that Beckstrom had died. Authorities say Rahmanullah Lakanwal drove across the country to carry out an “ambush-style” attack. Pirro mentioned it's too soon to determine the suspect’s motives.

Here's what to know about the federal ban threatening the market for THC-infused drinks and snacks
SUMMARY: THC-infused drinks and snacks have soared in popularity as alcohol sales have declined in recent years. But the bill that ended the federal government shutdown this month includes a provision to ban THC products derived from hemp. The $24 billion industry is now scrambling to save itself before the ban takes effect a year from now. A loophole in the 2018 farm bill allowed products containing THC to spread across the country. That's been a lifeline for some breweries that have turned to canning THC-infused beverages, but it's also prompted concern about sales of intoxicating products at gas stations an convenience stores across the country.

Trump criticizes the program that brought Afghan refugees to the US who fought the Taliban
SUMMARY: The man accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington is one of about 76,000 Afghans brought to the U.S. after the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. The program, called Operation Allies Welcome, was created in 2021. Then-President Joe Biden said the U.S. owed it to those who opposed the Taliban to provide a safe haven. Critics argued the resettlement process was poorly planned. The accused shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, worked with the CIA in Afghanistan. Resettlement groups emphasize that one individual's actions shouldn't reflect on all Afghan refugees.

SUMMARY: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the resignation of his powerful chief of staff, Andrii Yermak, whose residence was searched earlier in the day by anti-corruption investigators. The searches come amid US pressure on Kyiv to sign a peace deal. Two national agencies fighting corruption in Ukraine said their searches targeted Yermak, but his spokesperson said he was not a suspect and had not been told what the searches related to. The raids are part of a major investigation into a $100 million energy sector corruption scandal. The European Union has emphasized that fighting corruption is central to Ukraine's EU accession. Yermak confirmed he is cooperating fully with investigators.

SUMMARY: Hong Kong firefighters have found dozens more bodies in a high-rise complex after a massive fire engulfed seven buildings. The death toll has risen to 128, with many still unaccounted for. Authorities said fire alarms in the complex, which housed many older people, did not sound during the fire. Authorities on Friday arrested eight more people involved in the building's renovation, including scaffolding subcontractors and project managers. The fire spread rapidly due to bamboo scaffolding and highly flammable foam panels. Crews have prioritized apartments from which they received emergency calls. The fire was fully extinguished Friday morning.

Israeli forces kill at least 13 people in southern Syria raid, officials and residents say
SUMMARY: Israeli forces have raided a village in southern Syria, killing at least 13 people, according to Syrian officials. It was the deadliest Israeli attack since its troops seized a swath of southern Syria a year ago following the ouster of former President Bashar Assad. Syria’s Foreign Ministry described Friday’s attack in the village of Beit Jin as a “horrific massacre,” saying women and children were among the dead. Israel said its troops were conducting an operation to seize suspects from the Jamaa Islamiya militant group in the village and came under fire from militants. It said they returned fire, killing a number of militants. Syrian officials say local residents confronted the troops and that the dead were civilians.

Russia outlaws Human Rights Watch as crackdown on dissent continues
SUMMARY: The Russian authorities have outlawed Human Rights Watch as an “undesirable organization,” making all involvement with the group a criminal offense. The designation means the international human rights group must stop all work in Russia, and opens those who cooperate with or support the organization to prosecution. The decision by the Russian Prosecutor General’s office is the latest in the unrelenting crackdown on Kremlin critics, journalists and activists that intensified to unprecedented levels after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Hungary's Orbán seeks more Russian oil and gas at Kremlin talks with Putin
SUMMARY: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has met Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks at the Kremlin. This marks a rare step from a European leader as Russia’s war continues in Ukraine. Orbán, considered Putin’s closest EU partner, said the focus is Hungary’s continued access to “cheap Russian oil and gas.” Hungary remains one of the few EU countries still importing large quantities of Russian fossil fuels. Orbán has opposed EU efforts to reduce reliance on Russian energy. He argues that Russian energy imports are crucial for Hungary’s economy, despite criticism from some quarters.

US-Russian crew of 3 starts 8-month mission on the International Space Station
SUMMARY: A U.S.-Russian crew of three has started a mission at the International Space Station after their launch on a Russian spacecraft. A Soyuz booster rocket lifted off Thursday afternoon from the Russia-leased Baikonur facility in Kazakhstan. It docked at the station about three hours later. The Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft carried NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Russian crewmates Sergei Mikaev and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov. They are expected to spend about eight months at the orbiting outpost. Russia's space agency, Roscosmos, reported Thursday evening that the crew after the flight was “in good health,” but a launch pad in Baikonur was damaged. It will be repaired shortly, the agency said.

A crystal Fabergé egg crafted for Russian royalty is expected to sell for more than $26 million
SUMMARY: A rare Fabergé egg crafted for Russia’s ruling family before the revolution is going up for auction. The egg is made from rock crystal with a snowflake motif of platinum and 4,500 tiny diamonds. It opens to reveal a basket of jeweled quartz flowers. The egg was commissioned by Czar Nicholas II in 1913 as a present for his mother. It changed hands several times and was believed lost until it was auctioned in 1994. Now, it’s expected to surpass the record $18.5 million paid for another Fabergé egg.

At least 94 dead as Hong Kong firefighters battle burning towers for a second day
SUMMARY: Firefighters in Hong Kong have been battling a deadly blaze at a high-rise apartment complex for a second day. The fire has claimed 94 lives, making it one of the deadliest in the city’s history. The blaze started on Wednesday at one of the towers and spread across seven buildings in the Wang Fuk Court complex. Rescuers are still going from apartment to apartment searching. Hong Kong leader John Lee said earlier Thursday that contact had been lost with 279 people. Authorities have arrested three men from a construction company on suspicion of manslaughter. Fleet of UPS planes grounded after deadly crash expected to miss peak delivery season
SUMMARY: UPS Airlines says a fleet of planes grounded after a deadly crash is expected to miss the peak holiday season due to inspections and possible repairs. An internal memo said Wednesday the airline predicts it will be several months before its McDonnell Douglas MD-11 fleet returns to service as it works to meet Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. The process was previously expected to take weeks. UPS intends to rely on contingency plans to deliver for customers throughout the peak season. Boeing took over as the manufacturer of MD-11s in 1997 and is working to help operators meet FAA requirements. An MD-11 plane crashed Nov. 4 in Louisville, Kentucky, killing 14 people.

Black Friday arrives with solid momentum despite tariffs and economic uncertainty
SUMMARY: Black Friday may no longer be the retail bacchanalia of years past, but the event still has enough enthusiasts to make it the biggest single shopping day in the U.S.. This year's traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season comes as companies navigate an uncertain economic environment. Many have absorbed some of the costs from the Trump administration's tariffs on imported goods and pulled back on hiring instead of raising prices for customers. Consumer confidence in the economy fell this month. Shoppers nonetheless have remained willing to spend, at least judging by the solid quarterly sales reports from major retailers. But many retail executives also say customers are focusing on deals and being selective.

Scientists capture the crackling sounds of what they believe is lightning on Mars
SUMMARY: Scientists have detected what they believe to be lightning on Mars by eavesdropping on the whirling wind recorded by NASA's Perseverance rover. A French-led team reported Wednesday that the crackling of electrical discharges was captured by a microphone on the rover. The researchers examined 28 hours of audio recordings, documenting 55 episodes of what they consider to be “mini lightning” over two Martian years. Almost all of them occurred during dust storms or dust devils. Lightning has already been confirmed at Jupiter and Saturn, and has long been suspected at Mars.
