FBN--PACKERS-BEARS-DITKA

Bears-Packers game features tributes to Mike Ditka on the field and in the stands

SUMMARY: The Chicago Bears wore No. 89 stickers on the backs of their helmets Sunday to pay tribute to former tight and and coach Mike Ditka two days after the Hall of Famer died at the age of 86. The Packers and Bears honored Ditka with a pregame moment of silence. No. 89 jerseys were a featured choice of attire among the sizable contingent of Bears fans who made the trip to Green Bay. Other fans wore Bears sweater vests similar to the one Ditka wore during the Super Bowl that capped Chicago’s 1985 season.

SOC--ENGLISH ROUNDUP

Man City taunted by Liverpool fans in first match since guilty verdicts

SUMMARY: Manchester City’s players have been jeered and taunted by Liverpool fans in a hostile atmosphere at Anfield. In City’s first game since the club was found guilty of a raft of financial breaches the team endured vitriol from Liverpool fans. Along with loud boos and chants of “cheat, cheat,” there were taunts of “going down,” in reference to potential punishments City could face. An independent panel found City artificially inflated its revenue by more than $1 billion to help sign some of soccer’s biggest stars as it went on to dominate the Premier League. City has appealed but potential sanctions could include a massive fine, points deductions or even expulsion from England’s top flight.

Olympic champion Zheng beats Andreeva in China Open final for first title win in 2 years

SUMMARY: Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen has won her first title in two years by beating French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-4 in the China Open final. Zheng clinched with her first match point chance by serving an ace then fell to the court sobbing with emotion. Zheng’s ranking plummeted due to an elbow injury from a career-high No. 4 last year to 160 this season. She was No. 54 as a wild card this week and will return to the top 30. Despite the loss Sunday, Andreeva is set to rise to a career-high No. 3 ranking.

Dodgers keep infielder Miguel Rojas on their NLCS roster against the Brewers

SUMMARY: Infielder Miguel Rojas is on the NL Championship Series roster for the Los Angeles Dodgers after being sidelined by lower back pain. Left-hander Justin Wrobleski also is part of the Dodgers’ roster for their matchup with Milwaukee. The Brewers went with the same 26-man group that they had for their NL Division Series against San Diego. Rojas underwent testing after he departed the Dodgers’ 3-1 victory at Atlanta in Game 3 of their NL Division Series. The imaging mostly showed prior back issues. The addition of Wrobleski gives the Dodgers 13 pitchers on their NLCS roster after they went with 12 for their matchup with the Braves. Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim was left off their NLCS roster.

SUMMARY: Max Verstappen raced hard into the first corner then cruised to his second consecutive Formula 1 win at the Singapore Grand Prix. Verstappen had been concerned about his Red Bull car’s “horrendous” starts and was slow off the line again, but managed to squeeze Charles Leclerc to the inside heading into the first corner and held the lead. BBO--WHITE SOX-UNEXPECTED END

White Sox strike out record 21 times, eliminated from Division Series after wasting 2-0 lead

SUMMARY: The Chicago White Sox have exited the postseason after a lackluster offensive performance. After winning the first two games of their AL Division Series against Cleveland, they struck out 21 times and managed only three hits in a 2-0 defeat on Saturday. This loss advanced the Guardians to an AL Championship Series matchup against Tampa Bay. José Ramírez hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and the White Sox became the fourth team in major league history to lose a Division Series after winning the first two games on the road. FBN--EAGLES-JAGUARS-EJECTIONS

Two ejections on opening kickoff of Eagles-Jaguars game in London

SUMMARY: A 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was nullified and two players were ejected. It was quite a start to the game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jaguars rookie Josh Cameron returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a would-be touchdown that was called back because of offsetting penalties including a hold by Jacksonville’s Branson Combs. Meanwhile, there was a scrum at midfield with pushing and shoving on both sides. When the dust settled, Jacksonville’s Bryan Thomas Jr. and Philadelphia’s Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were ejected. And the teams did the kickoff all over again.

SOC--SWEDEN-WILD HALF

Wild 11-goal second half in Swedish soccer league game that was scoreless at halftime

SUMMARY: One of the wildest second halves of a game in soccer history hardly seemed likely with the score 0-0 at halftime between two midtable teams in the Swedish league. When it was all over Saturday in Stockholm after an 11-goal half, Brommapojkarna won 6-5 at AIK, having blown a 5-1 lead and then sealing victory with the last kick. Mads Hansen scored the decisive goal in the ninth minute of stoppage time, just 90 seconds after AIK thought they had earned an unlikely point. Borussia Dortmund once scored 10 second-half goals in a Bundesliga game won 11-1 against Arminia Bielefeld in November 1982.

Georgia is in line to replace Texas at No. 1 in AP poll; LSU likely to fall out of top 10

SUMMARY: There’ll be a new No. 1 team when The Associated Press Top 25 is released Sunday afternoon. Texas’ four-week run atop the rankings is set to end after its 27-24 loss to unranked Oklahoma. No. 2 Georgia is first in line to replace the Longhorns. Georgia had the second-most first-place votes last week and knocked off No. 6 Alabama 20-17 on the road. The Bulldogs haven’t been No. 1 since early in the 2024 season. Kentucky’s 35-34 win over No. 10 LSU likely will push the Tigers out of the top 10 and return the Wildcats to Top 25.
