Two-time defending champ Aryna Sabalenka beats Taylor Townsend to reach the US Open quarterfinals

SUMMARY: Solving some early struggles holding serve, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka overpowered Taylor Townsend to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. Townsend broke Sabalenka three times in the two-time defending champion’s first four service games as she looked to spring the upset. Sabalenka found a groove, regained her confidence and won 6-4, 6-3. Men’s second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz faces Tommy Paul in the second match of the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz has dropped just one set through three rounds in his first tournament back following a wrist injury.

F1 leader Kimi Antonelli wins Italian GP after epic charge from the back

SUMMARY: Kimi Antonelli has won the Italian Grand Prix, despite having started 19th on the grid. It took the Mercedes driver fewer than 17 laps to fight his way to the front. The rest of the race was spent tussling with teammate and title rival George Russell for the lead. Antonelli passed him for the final time with three laps remaining, going on to become the first Italian to win at Monza in 60 years. That at least gave the crowd something to cheer about after Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out of the scuderia’s home race early on. In the other Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton finished sixth.

Man United stunned in added time to draw 2-2 at Everton in the Premier League

The deadline day signing came off the bench to make his debut and curled a brilliant long-range shot into the top corner to salvage a point for his new club. United twice led at Hill Dickinson Stadium through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, who made it 2-1 in the 88th. But Everton had an answer on both occasions, with Tyrique George also scoring.

China edges Czech Republic in overtime thriller at Women’s Basketball World Cup, US-Italy later

SUMMARY: China needed overtime to edge the Czech Republic 74-70 in a thrilling game at the Women’s Basketball World Cup. Han Xu has scored 22 points and drew China level at 53-53 in the final quarter after her team had trailed for most of the game. Earlier, Ezi Magbegor scored 21 points as Australia reached the final phase with a physical 87-71 win over Turkey. Australia next plays European champion Belgium on Monday in a showdown that will likely decide which team progresses directly to the quarterfinals as group winner. Later, Belgium faces Puerto Rico in their second group game and the United States plays Italy. The U.S. hasn’t lost a game at the World Cup since the semifinal game of the 2006 tournament.

A Sunday night at Lambeau marks Dan Hicks’ 35th NBC Sports season milestone

SUMMARY: Dan Hicks thought it was incredible when he reached 30 years at NBC Sports. As he reaches another milestone, he considers it pretty remarkable. Hicks begins his 35th season at NBC on Sunday night when Notre Dame faces Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. Besides calling Notre Dame football, Hicks is best known as the lead announcer for golf, as well as swimming and skiing at the Olympics. Hicks has become one of NBC’s steady play-by-play voices despite not having done it before arriving at the network in 1992 after three years at CNN.

Despite widespread calls for him to step down FIFA said Infantino will seek next year to win a fourth and final term in office through 2031. European soccer’s governing body UEFA has led the calls for Infantino to go, saying it had lost confidence in him.

Fire alarm forces 2 a.m. evacuation at Women’s Basketball World Cup teams’ hotel

SUMMARY: A fire alarm went off in the middle of the night at the hotel where all of the Women’s Basketball World Cup teams were staying early Sunday morning. The players and coaches all had to evacuate the hotel around 2 a.m. before going back in about an hour later. The Americans stay at a different hotel so weren’t affected by the early morning wake-up. There was no fire, someone had pushed the emergency alarm button in the elevator, according to Australia coach Sandy Brondello.

Lane Kiffin’s debut with No. 11 LSU matches the hype in a 51-10 victory over outmatched Clemson
