US--TIGER WOODS

Tiger Woods pleads no contest to reckless driving charge over rollover crash in Florida

SUMMARY: Tiger Woods has pleaded no contest to a reckless driving charge in Florida. Woods was arrested in March following a rollover crash near his home on Jupiter Island and was initially charged with driving under the influence. The golf legend appeared Wednesday in court in Martin County, to enter his plea on the lesser charge. Authorities say deputies found two pain pills in Woods’ pocket after the crash, and he showed signs of impairment. He did a Breathalyzer test, which came out negative, but refused to take a urine test. Woods said little during the hearing. He arrived at the courthouse with his girlfriend, Vanessa Trump, President Donald Trump’s former daughter-in-law.

RB Aneyas Williams ready to make long-awaited 1st college start as No. 4 Notre Dame faces Wisconsin

SUMMARY: Notre Dame running back Aneyas Williams spent his first two college seasons waiting for a chance to prove himself. Then last winter, he had right elbow surgery and considered transferring. Eventually, Williams decided to come back to South Bend to show he could replace not one, but two NFL first-round draft picks. On Sunday, Williams is expected to make his long-awaited first college start when the No. 4 Fighting Irish face Wisconsin at historic Lambeau Field. And it’s starting to feel more like what Williams envisioned when he chose Notre Dame.

FBC--NCAA ELIGIBILITY

Judge rejects NCAA bid to dismiss order, clearing Missouri’s Webb to play just over 24 hours later

SUMMARY: Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz learned Wednesday that a judge has cleared defensive tackle Sterling Webb to play this season, with the first game barely 24 hours away. The NCAA’s motion to dismiss a temporary restraining order was denied by a St. Louis County judge. The Tigers play Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Thursday. Drinkwitz expressed his frustration with the chaotic state of college athletics, and how the multitude of court cases have thrown the start of the season into chaos. Webb, one of the Tigers’ most experienced players, has been practicing with the team ever since receiving a temporary restraining order in late July.

BKL--WCUP-US ARRIVES

US women look to jell quickly in Berlin as World Cup looms with little practice time

SUMMARY: The U.S. women’s national basketball team is short on practice time heading into a major competition where anything less than winning a gold medal is considered a failure. The Americans will have to jell quickly if they hope to win a fifth straight FIBA women’s World Cup. The tournament begins Friday, when the U.S. plays China in one of eight games in Berlin. The Americans already have had a couple of practices in Berlin since their staggered arrivals, marking the first time that the 12 players on the squad were together as a team. The U.S. is working in a bunch of young, new players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers, with half the roster making its World Cup debut.

SKI--FIS-RUSSIA-BELARUS

Skiers and snowboarders from Russia, Belarus get neutral status terms from FIS for new season

SUMMARY: The International Ski and Snowboard Federation says athletes from Russia and Belarus can continue to compete with approved neutral status this season but no symbols of national identity. The governing body says it requires athletes, coaches and officials from those countries to “sign a declaration of neutrality” with sanctions that can be imposed for breaching the pledge. Russian skiers won a December ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport ending a near four-year ban from international events during the war on Ukraine. It let them return to World Cup events in Alpine, cross-country and freestyle skiing, and snowboarding.

FBN--AUSTRALIA-THE G

A game Down Under has been a long time coming for the NFL. It’s a good thing Aussies revel in the long game. It’s fitting, too, that the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers will be playing their season-opening game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground — known locally as the MCG or, more commonly, “The G.” That’s where for almost 150 years Australia has been hosting test cricket, which can run for five days yet still finish without a winner.
