CAR--NASCAR-RICHMOND PREVIEW
DESCRIPTION: It’s been an eventful season for Christopher Bell, who rebounded from a broken wrist in the most violent crash in Next Gen history two months ago to charge into the thick of playoff contention. Bell has seven second places this season, tying the single-season record for most runner-up finishes without a victory (set by Harry Gant in 1981). Bell will try to end the streak at Richmond Raceway (where he naturally has a career-best finish of second four years ago). By Nate Ryan. Text, photos. SUMMARY: LSU coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday that he is standing by his initial stance on allowing cornerback D.J. Pickett to wear the No. 5 jersey previously worn by 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels — even in the face of objections and legal threats from the former Tigers quarterback. LSU’s official online store has even removed replica Daniels jerseys from its website. Daniels said in a social media post that the matter will not affect his preparation for the NFL season. Kiffin has said he doesn’t want to break a promise made to Pickett by the previous coaching regime that the player could wear No. 5.

Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom leaves start against Angels because of right triceps fatigue
SUMMARY: Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom has left his start against the Los Angeles Angels after two innings because of right triceps fatigue. The 38-year-old right-hander, who has been dealing with a left hip and glute injury since the All-Star break, escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the first but gave up two runs and five hits during a 32-pitch second. He was replaced by right-hander Peyton Gray to begin the third with the Angels leading 2-0. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one. He needs two strikeouts to become the ninth active pitcher and 94th in major league history to reach 2,000.

BKN--LAKERS-NEW OWNERS
Josh Kushner moves into spotlight after stunning purchase of Lakers with partner Bob Iger
SUMMARY: Josh Kushner and partner Bob Iger reached a deal this week to purchase control of the Los Angeles Lakers at a valuation of $12.5 billion. For a billionaire and a tech investor who also has one of the U.S.′ best-known surnames, Kushner has managed to stay off the front pages and out of the world’s broader discourse to a remarkable degree. That’s all changed this summer with a failed attempt to purchase a stake in future World Cup profits, followed by his swift acquisition of the glamorous Lakers. Kushner and Iger have some history in basketball but previously cheered for other teams.

Chairman George McCaskey says the team will keep the same name at whatever location it chooses. The Bears have played in Illinois since the team’s founding in 1920 as the Decatur Staleys.

The comments come two days after White’s fiery 2 1/2-minute speech, defending herself from criticism that she did not show enough public support for Fever players after Sophie Cunningham drew a hard foul during a game at Chicago last weekend. White finished her prep career as the girls career scoring leader in Indiana, led Purdue to the national championship in 1998-99 and was one of the original Fever players.

FBC--COLORADO-GO-GO OFFENSE
Described as basketball on grass, Brennan Marion’s fast-paced ‘Go-Go’ offense arrives at Colorado
SUMMARY: Colorado’s football team is embracing a new “Go-Go” offense implemented by offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. Described as basketball on grass, this fast-paced, unorthodox system aims to highlight young quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis and unlock a stagnant ground game. Marion, who literally wrote the book on this offense, left his heading coaching job at Sacramento State to join the Buffaloes. The scheme features quick plays and unbalanced formations, keeping defenses constantly guessing. Marion’s approach has been successful at previous coaching stops, including UNLV, where his offense thrived. The Buffaloes are coming off a 3-9 season. They open the season on Sept. 3 at Georgia Tech.
