SOC--US-PULISIC

Christian Pulisic to miss US World Cup match against Australia because of calf injury

SUMMARY: U.S. star Christian Pulisic will miss his nation’s World Cup match against Australia because of a calf injury. American coach Maurice Pochettino made the announcement during an interview with Fox about 90 minutes before the kickoff at Lumen Field. Pulisic left the opening 4-1 win over Paraguay at halftime. Pochettino said the 27-year-old attacker was kicked in the back of his left calf during a training session ahead of the game and felt tightness during the match. Pulisic trained on his own in the leadup to the game against the Socceroos. Pulisic has 33 goals in 87 international appearances.

SOC--WCUP-COMPETING ALLEGIANCES

World Cup players with dual eligibility face a tough choice about which country to represent

SUMMARY: The World Cup is showcasing players with diverse backgrounds who could have represented different countries. Folarin Balogun, born in the U.S., chose to play for the United States over England or Nigeria. Yasin Ayari picked Sweden over Tunisia, scoring twice against the North African team. Ayyoub Bouaddi switched from France to Morocco just before the tournament. This World Cup is a melting pot, reflecting global migration. Many players have mixed backgrounds and could choose between multiple national teams. FIFA’s relaxed eligibility rules have made these switches easier, highlighting the tournament’s diversity.

Leafs acquire Darren Raddysh from Lightning and sign him to an 8-year contract

SUMMARY: The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Darren Raddysh to an eight-year contract after acquiring his rights in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Raddysh’s contract is worth $68 million, a person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press. The 30-year-old is coming off setting career highs with 22 goals, 48 assists and 70 points in 73 games with Tampa Bay. He produced the same amount over the previous two seasons combined after becoming a full-time NHL player as recently as 2023.

GLF--US OPEN-NIEMANN

Joaquin Niemann penalized for throwing club at US Open

SUMMARY: Joaquin Niemann’s bad first round of the U.S. Open has become even worse. He was given a two-shot penalty for throwing a club on the sixth hole at Shinnecock Hills. That turned his 9 on the hole into an 11. He wound up with 78. It’s the latest example of golf trying to crack down on bad behavior. The USGA has a code of conduct policy. But all golf organizations have been meeting to develop a consistent plan. The Masters used it for the first time this year when issuing a conduct warning to Sergio Garcia for breaking his driver.

GLF--US OPEN

Wyndham Clark has lowest opening round at Shinnecock Hills to lead US Open

SUMMARY: Wyndham Clark has the lowest opening round at Shinnecock Hills in U.S. Open history. Clark returned Friday morning to complete his first round. He made two pars for a 6-under 64. That gives him a two-shot lead over Dustin Johnson and they quickly headed back out to Shinnecock Hills for the second round. The start will be remembered for a fog delay that worked out for the late starters. The USGA set up the course easier to keep it fair due to wind. But the delay meant Clark and Johnson had a soft course in less wind late in their round.

US--WCUP-TICKET PROBLEMS

World Cup ticket buyers are left stranded as resale purchases fall through

SUMMARY: The World Cup has been delivering thrills on the pitch, but fans have flooded social media with complaints about tickets that never arrived, orders canceled at the last minute and hours spent trying to sort out problems between FIFA’s ticketing system and outside resale platforms. Many complaints seem to be about industry titan StubHub, but people have also reported problems when buying through competitors such as SeatGeek and Vivid Seats. Interviews with fans and industry experts show some cases stem from technical glitches, while others could involve sellers who never had tickets in the first place. FIFA says sales through its official site are guaranteed to go through.

Morocco star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial in a rape case, French appeals court confirms

SUMMARY: A French appeals court confirms that Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco star player Achraf Hakimi will stand trial in a rape case. The defender is currently playing with Morocco at the World Cup. He had appealed a February decision by an investigative judge. Hakimi denied any wrongdoing after facing preliminary charges of rape in March 2023. A 24-year-old woman accused him of raping her at his home in a Paris suburb. The Versailles court’s decision was released just hours before Morocco takes on Scotland at the World Cup. A date for the trial has yet to be announced.
