FBN--CHIEFS-MAHOMES

Mahomes attends the start of the Chiefs’ offseason program as he rehabs torn knee ligaments

SUMMARY: Patrick Mahomes is back for the Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason program as he works to recover from torn knee ligaments. He tore his ACL and LCL in December, an injury that coincided with the end of the Chiefs’ playoff hopes. Surgery followed, and he has been rehabbing in Kansas City. Mahomes aims to play in Week 1 without restrictions. The offseason program began Monday with strength training, meetings and rehab. Mahomes stayed in Kansas City this offseason to work with the Chiefs’ staff. The team added Justin Fields from the Jets last month as insurance if Mahomes needs more recovery time when Week 1 approaches.

BKC--BIG EAST-ACKERMAN RETIREMENT

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman will retire in August, ending a transformative era

SUMMARY: The Big East says Commissioner Val Ackerman will retire at the end of August. Ackerman has served in that role since 2013, presiding over the rebirth of the conference following the decision a year earlier for the Big East to split. Ackerman led the negotiations that resulted in the return of UConn in 2020 from the American Athletic Conference. Big East men’s basketball teams won four national championships during her tenure, with two by Villanova and two by UConn — more than any other Division I conference in that span. The UConn women’s team won its 12th national title in 2025.

FBC--CHEMISTRY LESSONS

Chemistry lessons: Roster overhauls make offseason bonding activities more critical in portal era

SUMMARY: Establishing team chemistry in college football is tougher than ever with so many players not staying at the same school for four years. But it’s still doable. Succeeding in the transfer portal era requires altering offseason objectives. Players aren’t just getting to know the playbook. They’re getting to know one another. New Mexico provides a model example on how teams can build chemistry even after roster overhauls. The Lobos had 75 newcomers last year and still went 9-4 for their first winning season since 2016.

FBN--NFL DRAFT-OVERACHIEVERS

Fernando Mendoza leads group of once-overlooked college recruits in the NFL draft

SUMMARY: Fernando Mendoza finished his prep career four years ago in Miami as an overlooked college prospect. He initially committed to Yale while being recruited by the likes of FIU, Bryant, Lehigh and Pennsylvania. He even seemed ready to accept a preferred walk-on spot with a Football Bowl Subdivision power, until California offered him a scholarship. With big-time schools investing heavily to find the kind of talent that can turn their programs into contenders, virtually everyone whiffed on the first Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback to also win a national championship since Joe Burrow in 2019. Now Mendoza is positioned to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Mendoza isn’t the only big surprise in this year’s draft class.

BBO--THIS WEEK IN BASEBALL

Mike Trout showed he’s still a big home run threat, but can he stay on the field?

SUMMARY: Mike Trout’s home run binge in New York this week was a flash of the outfielder’s slugging ability. Trout is six seasons removed from his most recent MVP in 2019. His last truly excellent year was in 2022, when he hit 40 home runs. Last season was only the second time since 2019 that he played more than 82 games, but he batted just .232 with an OPS below .800. The batting average is about this same this season. But with seven home runs in 22 games, Trout looks like an offensive force again. He went deep five times as the Los Angeles Angels split a four-game series with the Yankees.
