FBC--GEORGIA-DEFENSE REBUILDING

DESCRIPTION: ATHENS, Ga. -- It’s no coincidence that Georgia’s back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022 were built on defense under coach Kirby Smart, a former defensive coach. The proud tradition of strong defenses slipped in 2024 when the Bulldogs won the SEC championship despite ranking eighth in the league with 20.57 points allowed per game. Georgia players insist they’re not looking to the past when they look to reclaim their status as one of the nation’s top defensive teams in 2025 behind the leadership of such players as linebackers CJ Allen and Raylen Wilson and safety KJ Bolden. The decision follows a January hearing in Forsyth County. The men were convicted in 2004 or 2005 for the killing of 61-year-old Nathaniel Jones. Jones died from a heart attack outside his home after being tied up, beaten and robbed. The defendants were teenagers at the time of their arrests. The judge cited recanted testimony, poor legal representation and DNA evidence. State attorneys are considering an appeal. The Attorney General’s office has asked the state Court of Appeals to halt enforcement of the judge’s order for now.

Real Madrid ‘firmly rejects’ US-hosted match and warns of ‘a turning point in the world of football’

SUMMARY: Real Madrid “firmly rejects” having a regular-season Spanish league game played in the United States and has warned of “a turning point in the world of football.” Villarreal in contrast is promising free travel and tickets for season-ticket holders if its match against Barcelona in Miami is approved in what would be a first for the league. The 17th-round match in La Liga would be played at the Hard Rock Stadium. Madrid said Tuesday it has taken action to keep the Dec. 20 match from happening in the U.S., claiming it would hurt the “integrity of the competition.” The Spanish soccer federation approved the request for the match on Monday but UEFA and FIFA still need to give their approval.

GLF--ON THE FRINGE-PLAYOFFS

Golf is not like team sports. It was never meant to have a finish line to the season

SUMMARY: There was so much faux outrage over Rory McIlroy missing the first PGA Tour postseason event. He wasn’t the first to skip it. And he didn’t even drop in the FedEx Cup. It should be a reminder that golf is not like other sports. There is no defining end to the season like a Super Bowl or a World Series. The PGA Tour originally called the postseason a “championship series” but then went to “playoffs” and it makes no sense. But what it created was incentive for the best to keep playing after the majors. That still works, even without McIlroy.
