SUMMARY: Gary Woodland will be going to his first Ryder Cup as an assistant captain for the American team. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley picked Woodland as his fifth and final vice captain for the Sept. 26-28 matches at Bethpage Black. Woodland’s only cup experience was playing in the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 2019. That was the same year he won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. Woodland joins Kevin Kisner, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Webb Simpson as Bradley’s assistants. BKN--BEASLEY INVESTIGATION-EXPLAINER

Malik Beasley should be in high demand after a career season. Off-court issues are changing that

SUMMARY: Malik Beasley should be riding high right now, after a season where he became just the fifth player in NBA history to make at least 300 shots from 3-point range in a single season. Instead, his future seems very uncertain. He’s a free agent and facing some serious off-court issues — including being part of an investigation surrounding what’s believed to be unusual betting patterns on games and now some unrelated legal matters involving his personal finances. Beasley has not been charged with any crime.

SUMMARY: K’Andre Miller is eager to start work with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes acquired the 25-year-old defenseman from the New York Rangers on Tuesday. They also signed him to a long-term deal. Carolina sees Miller as a strong fit for their aggressive, fast-paced system. The former first-round pick brings size and skating ability to the blue line. The Hurricanes are retooling the defense with veterans Brent Burns and Dmitry Orlov likely departing. In a Zoom call with reporters Wednesday, Miller said Carolina is “a fun group to watch” and he’s eager to join the Hurricanes’ style.

Wimbledon: No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka avoids the kind of upset that has happened a lot this year

Eventually, the No. 1-ranked Sabalenka asserting herself for a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Marie Bouzkova on Wednesday to avoid the sort of surprise that has sent a group of seeded players home. NHL, NHLPA, IOC and IIHF finalize agreement for players to participate in 2026 Olympics

SUMMARY: The NHL, NHLPA and international officials finalized a long-ago agreed-to deal to send players to the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. The league, union, International Ice Hockey Federation and International Olympic Committee confirmed the participation of NHL players at the games for the first time since 2014. The groups negotiated the agreement and announced it initially last year. The final touches took time to figure out after officials insisted for months they were not concerned about the lack of a signed document. The deal opens the door for NHL participation to continue in 2030, something that had also been agreed to in February 2024.

BBI--JAPAN-STADIUM CONTROVERSY

Stadium where Babe Ruth played in Tokyo is at the center of a disputed park redevelopment plan

SUMMARY: A controversial redevelopment plan in Tokyo’s Jingu Gaien park threatens historic landmarks and green spaces. The project, approved more than two years ago, includes demolishing a historic baseball stadium where Babe Ruth once played and a nearby rugby venue. Critics argue it prioritizes commercial development over cultural heritage and public space. On Wednesday, a coalition of experts and citizens submitted an open letter urging reassessment. Opponents, including novelist Haruki Murakami and environmentalists, warn the plan endangers century-old gingko trees and lacks transparency. Developers aim to replace the stadiums with high-rise towers, sparking debates over preserving history versus modernization.

Thomas in 2022 became the first openly transgender athlete to win a Division I title. The school now shows other athletes holding the school’s top times in Thomas’ events, noting she set records under rules in place at the time.
