At least 5 dead after Amazon cargo plane barreled off runway at Miami airport

MIAMI (AP) — Authorities say at least five people are dead after an Amazon cargo plane barreled off a Miami airport runway and smashed into cars. The plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday. Flights were paused at the busy travel hub. Plumes of black smoke poured from the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft was heading into Florida from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Videos and images showed the plane stopped beyond the airport runway as smoke billowed into the air. The Prime Air plane came to rest at the northwest end of the airport.

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' makes it 6 weeks in a row at No. 1 as Hollywood wraps a banner summer

NEW YORK (AP) — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained the No. 1 movie in theaters over the weekend, becoming just the second film this decade to top the box office for six straight weeks. The last release to enjoy such a long stretch leading the box office was 2022’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.” “Brand New Day,” the fourth standalone Spider-Man starring Tom Holland, collected $18 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Universal Pictures’ “The Odyssey,” as it has for much of the “Spider-Man” run, remained in second place. Christopher Nolan’s epic added $13 million. Both blockbusters helped lead Hollywood to its best summer since before the pandemic.

US tourism groups want to win Canadian visitors back. A testy trade war isn't helping

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An acrimonious trade war between the United States and Canada is threatening to reinforce the resolve of Canadians who stopped visiting the U.S. last year. The number of Canadians traveling to the U.S. plunged after President Donald Trump returned to office with remarks about making Canada the 51st state. Tentative signs the informal travel boycott might be easing emerged this summer. But relations between the U.S. and Canadian governments have deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. The rift hasn't stopped state and local tourism officials and travel-related businesses from trying to win Canadian visitors back. Some Canadians say no special offers or advertising campaigns will work until someone else occupies the White House.

A Kentucky man with a meat allergy was craving a burger. So he got into ostrich farming

DANVILLE, Ky. (AP) — U.S. ostrich farmers say they’re finding new customers who developed a red meat allergy triggered by tick bites. Ostrich meat is red when raw and has a taste similar to beef. Kentucky farmer Brent Williams was diagnosed about seven years ago with alpha-gal syndrome. So he was eager to get into the ostrich business when farmer W.D. King proposed raising them on his central Kentucky farm. King and other farmers say they are seeing interest from alpha-gal sufferers who crave red meat. There are about 10 to 15 ostrich farms in the U.S. dedicated to raising the African native birds.

Trump keeps heralding an economic boom, but even a solid jobs report is causing problems for him

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has been promising an economic boom, but Friday's positive jobs report left him frustrated. He vented about inflation and interest rates, blaming financial markets, the Federal Reserve, and trade partners. Trump dismissed the idea that job gains could lead to inflation, saying, "Success does not cause inflation. Stupidity causes inflation." His inability to deliver stronger growth has hurt his credibility. Trump blames high interest rates and tariffs for economic challenges. Despite this, his aides remain optimistic about AI, tariffs, and tax cuts boosting growth. However, experts warn that growth alone won't fix budget deficits.

Iran says it plans to announce a new 'exclusion zone' near the Strait of Hormuz

CAIRO (AP) — A senior Iranian official says Tehran plans to announce an “exclusion zone” outside the Strait of Hormuz, targeting vessels it believes are attempting to transit the waterway. This comes a day after the U.S. struck three Iranian oil tankers in response to Tehran launching ballistic missiles at U.S. warships, which experts called a dangerous escalation. There were few details about Iran's planned new zone. The U.S. has been increasing economic pressure on Iran after negotiations collapsed. The Strait of Hormuz is crucial to global oil shipments. Both the U.S. and Iran are claiming the ability to get oil out to the world.

Far-right Alternative for Germany party wins big in regional election but falls short of majority

MAGDEBURG, Germany (AP) — The far-right Alternative for Germany party has surged to a resounding victory in a regional election. But it fell a little short of winning a majority Sunday in its quest to form the country’s first far-right state government since World War II. The party of Germany’s unpopular leader, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, slumped to a disastrous result in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. The anti-migration and Russia-friendly Alternative for Germany’s candidate for governor said "we have written history” and the party had a clear mandate to govern.

Indonesia’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the situation. The volcano remains active with officials evaluating the situation.

US envoys Witkoff and Kushner hold talks in Ukraine after meeting with Putin

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner say they have held encouraging talks in Kyiv. The trip on Sunday was their first official visit to Ukraine with European partners joining a third round of the discussions. The trip follows the American envoys' meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday that produced no announced breakthroughs. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that talks covered air defense, a “winter package” of support and security guarantees. Kushner said that the envoys hoped to revive trilateral talks with Russia. Russian and Ukrainian forces traded strikes overnight despite a pause on attacks on each other's capitals.
