The American Spititual Ensemble

OXFORD — On Feb. 28, The American Spiritual Ensemble will conduct choral workshops for youth and sharing a public concert in Oxford.

The group is a well-established choral ensemble, founded by Dr. Everett McCorvey in the 1990s. Over the years, the Ensemble has grown to a membership of 100 renowned opera singers, prominent music theatre artists, leading faculty and music department chairs of leading music schools nationwide. A couple of times a year, 25 singers come together and tour nationally and internationally with Dr. McCorvey sharing spirituals, jazz works, classical music, and world music.

This year, The Church of the Holy Trinity will host morning choral workshops for public school choirs. “The Church of the Holy Trinity is extremely grateful the American Spiritual Ensemble requests to return to our village and experience the hospitality of our congregation and community,” a statement from the church said.

Three choirs will come from Dorchester County Public Schools, one choir from Talbot County Public Schools, and a local women’s ensemble will participate in the 75-minute workshops led by Ensemble members. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our area youth and musicians,” the statement said. “They will see and experience that they too can follow their dreams and make music a significant part of their lives.”

The workshops will be hosted at several venues throughout Oxford and lunch will be provided by community businesses. A grant from The Pauline F. and W. David Robbins Charitable Foundation Trust is helping fund these workshops. Additional donations to support the workshops are welcomed.
The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary of The Church of The Holy Trinity, 502 S. Morris Street, Oxford. All are welcome to attend.

“If you have never experienced The American Spiritual Ensemble in concert, you will be amazed at the incredible music they share,” the statement said. A freewill offering will be taken to defray the Ensemble’s expenses.
