HOOPERS ISLAND — Always held the first Sunday in June the 47th annual W. T. Ruark Fishing Tournament will be June 2 from 2 to 6 p.m. this year at the Hoopers Island Volunteer Fire Company.
There will be as usual fun, food and prizes. Tickets are still only $5.
Everyone who registers a legal sized fish in the tourney is eligible for raffles. All ticket holders, fishing or not, are included in door prize drawings.
There will be 6 fish categories: Trout, Hardhead, Spot, Perch, Catfish and Rockfish.
Age groups are Adult 1st And 2nd Place, Child 5-11 and Youth 12-17.
There will be over 30 cash prizes, trophies, special awards, raffle prizes and a “mystery prize.”
Get your tickets at the Hoopers Island General Store, Old Salty’s Restaurant, P.L. Jones Boatyard, Gootee’s Marine in Golden Hill, W.T. Ruark Co.; R&D Bost Supply in Cambridge and at Taylors Island Family Campground. Tickets must be purchased by 7 p.m. June 1.
There will be food served starting at 2 p.m., door prizes will be given out, entries will be accepted by the judges beginning at 3 p.m. and continuing until 5 p.m. when fish registration closes.
Those with experience know to try to get a likely winner in early as a tie goes to the first fish registered. Judges carefully measure the fish from the mouth to the tip of the tail. Best fish are recorded on the leader board, until a bigger fish comes along.
Special prizes are also awarded for the longest hardhead, the longest fish caught by a woman, the longest fish caught, and various memorial trophies and cash prizes for the three ages of fishing enthusiasts.
All fish to be caught in Maryland waters on hook and line on June 2. See rules and regulations on back of ticket which needs to accompany any fish entered in the tournament.
