STEVENSVILLE — The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School men’s outdoor track and field team is charging into State Championship week with another title under their belt, after winning the Region 1A East crown for the second year in a row.

That victory followed the previous weeks’ first-place finishes in the Bayside Conference and North Bayside meets.

The women’s team is also finishing the season on a high note, after earning second place in the region, with only six girls competing. Washington High School in Somerset County won the women’s title, with 124 points to the Lady Vikes’ 89.

In Maryland high school outdoor track and field competition, there are 18 events – 12 on the track, as well as four jumps and two throws. Athletes can compete in up to four events per meet.

When there are more than eight teams, each event is scored down to eighth place, with points awarded being 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.

The Viking men’s win puts them in a promising position for this week’s state championship – the top two in each regional final and the next top eight times or marks from all regions in the classification advance to the state meet.

In addition, any individual competitors or relay teams who achieve the advancement standards in their region meet can head to the final. The squad’s depth and versatility serve them well in this regard, with many C-SD athletes having placed fifth or sixth, but still reaching those standards.

At the conclusion of the two-day Region 1A event, top finishes included:

• Men’s Team - 1A East Region Champions
• Women’s Team - 1A East Region 2nd Place
• 4x100 Relay Team - JaKuez Snead, Tori Willis, KayIon Marine, Te’Shar Drummond - 1A East Region Champions
• Kassidy Young - 1A East Region Champion in shot put and discus
• Le’Asia Todd - 1A East Region Champion in Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, and 300 Hurdles
• Tori Willis - 1A East Region Champion in 300 Hurdles
• Jayden Smith - 1A East Region Champion in Long Jump and 110 High Hurdles
• Te’Kai Drummond - 1A East Region Champion in 800 meter

Among the women’s teams, tying for second with C-SD was Colonel Richardson; Bohemia Manor was fourth, with 78; and then Perryville and Pocomoke, 72; Kent County, 47; Snow Hill, 35; Mardela, 30; North Dorchester, 24; and Crisfield, 9.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 1A State Championships will be held Wednesday and Thursday at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover. On Wednesday, competition will begin at 3 p.m., with action getting underway on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Admission is $10, ages 6 and under are free. Tickets will only be sold online through the GoFan ticketing website. GoFan charges a service fee independent of the MPSSAA.

There is no parking fee for this event.
