Planning for the September 20, Veterans Stand Down at Dover's Schutte Park is well underway.

The Annual Delaware Veterans Stand Down will return Friday, September 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dover’s Schutte Park.

First begun in 2009, the event is open to veterans of all generations and conflicts. It includes an opening ceremony, breakfast and lunch, clothing, haircuts, flu shots, music, and local dentists who volunteer their services. Tables from community organizations offer free services, toiletries, and job applications.

Last year's event served more than 1,250 veterans with outreach from 127 local businesses, the VA, federal and state offices, and faith-based organizations.

"The dental community has provided over $100,000 in free dental care to our veterans community since the last stand down. It's their way of giving back to those who have served," said organizer Liz Byers-Jiron, who has made outreach a family affair.

She and her husband Bill Jiron and daughter Mindy Bacchus have worked together for many years assisting veterans from all branches and conflicts with housing, filing for earned federal benefits, and the services and respect they merit. Bill is an Air Force retiree and Liz worked for the Navy in Washington, D.C. for 36 years.

“Planning goes on year-round with volunteers from many groups assisting, including Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen, himself a veteran who has worked with us and other veteran-related organizations for years.”

The not-for-profit organization relies on financial support and in-kind donations from the community. "We are looking for volunteers, golf carts and drivers, transportation trucks, tables and chairs, and other items.

Tax-deductible contributions may be made to the Veterans Awareness Center, 1512 Caldwell Corner Road, Townsend, DE 19734. Call 302-349-4898 or email vacfsd@gmail.com for more information.
