Potter and art at SU

The Salisbury University Clay Club hosts its annual spring pottery and art sale 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 6-9, in the lobby of Fulton Hall. Items created by club members will be available for purchase.

Young Peoples’ Show

Dorchester Center for the Arts is hosting the Annual Young Peoples’ Show, a celebration of the talent of the young artists of Dorchester County Public Schools. The exhibit opened Friday, and runs through May 25, displaying creations of students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Opening hours are Tuesday 12-8, Wednesday 11-5, Thursday 12-8, Friday 11-5, Saturday 11-5. There will be an awards reception on Second Saturday, May 11, during which winning artists in various categories will be recognized, and there will be extended hours for the exhibit until 8 p.m.

Yoga on Navy Point

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Yoga on Navy Point will take place in St. Michaels on Tuesday evenings throughout May and June.

Beginning May 7, instructor Colleen Morrison will lead participants through an all-levels class on CBMM’s waterfront campus on Tuesdays from 5:30–6:30 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks.

Registration is required and open now at bit.ly/CBMMYoga2024. The cost is $20 for a single session or $70 for all four sessions in May or June, with a 20% discount for CBMM members on all pricing.

Participants are invited to bring their own mats, props, and water. In the case of inclement weather, class will be held in the Small Boat Shed or Van Lennep Auditorium.

No experience is necessary to enjoy Yoga on Navy Point.

Lower Shore competition

May 10-31 - Lower Shore Addiction Awareness Visual Arts Competition

Hosted by the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, this competition is open to middle and high school students in Dorchester, Somerset, Worcester, and Wicomico Counties, and is supported by the Maryland Opioid Operational Command Center, and the Wicomico, Worcester, Somerset and Dorchester County Health Departments.   

The competition is an opportunity for Lower Shore students to explore the theme of addiction awareness and recovery, exercise their creativity, and have their art displayed to the wider community. The critical conversations that their art encourages are key to keeping opioid addiction awareness, and hope for recovery, integrated in our community and family conversations.

Soup ’n Walk Program

Adkins Arboretum has announced the 2024 lineup for its Soup ’n Walk programs. Explore the Arboretum’s forest, meadows and wetland on a guided walk themed to the season, then enjoy lunch and a brief talk about nature and nutrition.

Copies of recipes are provided. All gift shop purchases on these days receive a 20% discount. This year’s offerings include:

Beavers, Tuckahoe Creek & Beyond

May 18, 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Observe Tuckahoe Creek view while scouting for signs of beavers. Plants of interest include mountain laurel, beech, tulip tree, pink lady’s slipper, Solomon’s seal and may apple. Menu: kale, apple, and lentil soup, green bean salad with honey cider vinaigrette, pumpernickel bread and apple butter, cinnamon crunch apple cake.

Bicycle, pedestrian and trail grants

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is accepting applications for two grant programs designed to expand bicycle and walking opportunities throughout the state. Applications for both the Transportation Alternatives Program and the Recreational Trails Program are being accepted through May 15.

The Transportation Alternatives Program focuses on projects that enhance mobility and accessibility along Maryland’s transportation network including bike and pedestrian facilities, the restoration of historic transportation building, and conversion of abandoned railway corridors to pedestrian trails. The Recreational Trails Program benefits construction, enhancement, repair and maintenance of land and water-based recreational trails and trail-related facilities for motorized and non-motorized use.

The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. May 15. For a list of all major State Highway Administration projects, visit Project Portal or the homepage at roads.maryland.gov.

House and Garden

Maryland House and Garden Pilgrimage (MHGP) will come to Dorchester County on June 1 for the first time since 2015. Tour ticket holders will have a chance to visit six private waterfront homes in the Neck District of the county plus historic St. John’s Chapel and Spocott Windmill Village. Proceeds of the tour will benefit the building of the Three Cultures Center at Handsell Historic Site.
A crab cake lunch will be served by the Neck District Volunteer Fire Company, as a fundraiser for the Fire Hall. Attendees are asked to support this cause by purchasing a separate lunch ticket.

Tred Avon Players

Tred Avon Players (TAP) is seeking volunteers to join its creative team.

Scenic Designer: TAP needs someone with a creative vision to design captivating sets that enhance storytelling. The designer will work closely with the director to bring their vision to life and oversee the construction of the sets.

Set Construction: Are you handy with tools? Do you have experience or want to learn how to build theatrical sets? TAP needs additional crew members for its upcoming show, Vanities, and future productions. You’ll work closely with the scenic designer out of a workshop in Oxford.

As a volunteer, you will receive complimentary tickets to shows.

CFF’s 2024 Festival Dates

The Chesapeake Film Festival is now open for submissions on Film Freeway for its 17th edition. Filmmakers from around the world are invited to submit their work for consideration for this event, set to take place in Easton, from Sept. 27-29.

As a platform dedicated to showcasing the best in independent cinema, the festival offers a unique opportunity for filmmakers to connect with audiences and industry professionals. 

The festival has also recently been awarded two grants: the Maryland Humanities’ Marilyn Hatza SHINE Memorial Grant and the Mid-Shore Community Foundation's Artistic Insights Fund Grant. These awards will further support the festival's mission of celebrating the art of filmmaking and fostering cultural exchange.

Main Street Gallery

The Main Street Gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Second Saturdays until 8 p.m. The gallery is at 518 Poplar St., in Cambridge.

Ridgely VFC line dancing

Ridgely Volunteer Fire Department offers line dancing to the public every second Wednesday of the month from 6-8 p.m. Cost is $5 per person, children 12 and under are free.

An instructor will teach one or two new dances each week and then there will be social time to show off dance moves. The Firehouse is located at 101 Sunset Boulevard, Ridgely. For more information, call 410-634-2424 or email ridgelyfd@comcast.net.
